Cheap Chinese EV Wuling Hong Guang MINI Sets Massive Sales Record
The biggest car market in the world China is now also the biggest EV market in the world as well and recently one of the country’s smallest cars the Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV became the best selling electric vehicle in the nation. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA)’s data the Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV reported an astonishing sales figure of 50,561 units in the month of December 2021 and posted a YoY growth of 42.9 percent, beating the likes of the BYD Qin and Tesla Model 3 and setting an all-time monthly high record.

Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV also became the first-ever electric car in China to reach a monthly sales figure of more than 50,000 units. While the Tesla Model Y also set its own record of 40,500 units sold in the country, its sibling Model 3 also broke its record by reaching sales of 30,102 units in the month of December.
The microcar Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV achieved a total sales figure of 395,451 in 2021 which translated into a 250.7 percent YoY growth. While the BYD Qin which took the second spot sold 187,227 units, and the Tesla Model 3 sold 150,890 units and came in the third spot. In addition, the combined total of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y sold in China in 2021 stood at around 320,743 units. While cumulatively, more than 500,000 units of the MINI EV have been sold in China in the last 19 months from June 2020.
Additionally, the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint ventures which comprise the SAIC, GM and Liuzhou Wuling Motors sold a total of over 60,000 EVs in December, setting a new record in the meantime. The MINI EV has ranked first in the same category for the 16th consecutive month, and it has also taken the top spot in the new energy preservation rate list from the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce Automobile group with an 89.78 percent efficiency rate.
Although the Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV cannot be directly compared to the standard cars like Model 3 or Model Y, the MINI EV’s affordability and practicality is helping it to gain more and more popularity in the nation creating a stronger demand for the vehicle. Forbye, the Chinese automobile maker is expected to continue the series by offering upgrades to the micro car, there are plans to launch new models of the mini electric vehicle in the nation as well.
The Mini EV is equipped with a 9.2 kWh battery capable of an NEDC range of 120 km (75 mi) or a 13.8kWh battery capable of an NEDC range of 170 km. The Mini EV can seat four people and is powered by a single electric motor producing 13 kW (17.4 hp) and 85 Nm of torque with rear-wheel drive. It has a top speed of 100 km/h and based on the NEDC driving cycle, the estimated energy consumption of the Mini EV is 8,1 kWh/100 km. Standard safety features of the Mini EV include anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitoring sensors, and rear parking sensors.
