LEGO and McLaren have teamed up to design this 1432-piece masterpiece, which will be on sale soon
McLaren Racing and LEGO have joined forces yet again, this week unveiling its most complex Formula 1 build to date. Made even more popular thanks to the Netflix docu-series Drive to Survive, which will enter its fourth season this year, LEGO and Formula 1 fans alike will soon be able to bring a piece of the action to their living room.
Set to go on sale online and in LEGO stores from March 1, 2022, the scaled-down LEGO McLaren Formula 1 car will cost just a fraction of the price of the real thing, at $279.99.
Finished in the team’s 2021 season livery and revealed just days ahead of McLaren’s team launch this Friday, it’s the first F1 car designed in LEGO’s more complex Technic range of pieces.
That means the assembled model – which measures up at 65cm long, 27cm wide, 13cm high, and comprises 1432 pieces – will feature a six-cylinder engine with moving cylinders, working suspension, steering activated from the cockpit and a differential lock.
The model is said to have been designed in close collaboration with engineering experts from the LEGO Group and McLaren Racing while the new 2022 Formula 1 race car was in development.
And the final product looks fantastic, according to McLaren Racing Technical Executive Director, James Key.
“We are excited to unveil the unique LEGO Technic model of our McLaren F1 car, a fun and engaging product that celebrates our 2021 season livery while giving fans a hands-on interpretation of the new 2022 F1 car design,” he said.
“This has been made possible by an agile collaboration with the LEGO Group team, who have truly embraced the spirit of our brave and bold approach to design.”
LEGO has previously offered motorsport-inspired models, including a Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 car, as well as several racers from the likes of Ford, Ferrari, Porsche and Bugatti.
