It is not only in Formula 1 where Mercedes-Benz dominates, and the brand is a leader in the world of model cars.
For the tenth time in 30 years, Mercedes-Benz model cars have claimed the “Top Original Model Brand” award of the year – as voted for by the readers of the magazine Model Fahrzeug.
This award is given to manufacturers who “take particular interest in the topic of model cars,” according to the competition organisers.
Winning models from this year’s awards are detailed below.
Super Model of the Year 2020
This title was awarded to the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman landaulet.
This is a version of the 1963 Mercedes-Benz 600 (W100) that received an extended wheelbase of 3,900 millimetres, and was designed to be a chauffeur-driven vehicle.
The W100 was an innovation at the time by being the first V8 passenger car on the market, and had several hydraulically-controlled comfort features.
The 1/18 scale replica of the Pullman W100, which costs €900, won both the “Super Model of the Year 2020” and “Collectors 1/18 Classics” prizes.
Collectors 1/87 Classic Cars
This title was awarded to the AMG 300 SEL 6.8 racing touring car.
At the 1971 24-Hour Spa-Francorchamps race in Belgium, the AMG 300 SEL 6.8 achieved a surprising class victory and took second place overall.
Schuco has now released a detailed 1/87 scale model of the popular red SEL, with a price of €10.
RC: Electro-Economy
This title was awarded to the RC model of the Unimog 406 series.
The 406 Unimog, which was in production from 1963 to 1989, hd been reproduced as a 1/87 scale model and can be controlled through a receiver.
Carson RC Sport made a 1/87 scale model, with a price of €100, and it is available in three versions – municipal, forestry, and Bundeswehr German army version.
Collectors 1/43 Current Large-Run Series
This title was awarded to the Mercedes-AMG GT R Formula 1 Safety Car.
Mercedes-AMG have been providing official safety vehicles to the Formula 1 series since 1996.
The model that won the award was based on the design before the latest model, used in 2020, came onto the scene.
Premium X developed the 1/43 scale model, with a price of €40.
Collectors 1/43 Commercial Vehicles
This title was awarded to the Benz 2CSN fire engine.
This model reflects back to the days before Mercedes-Benz became the company they are today, and was just Benz.
This 1924 “overland fire engine” was built on the basis of the Benz 2CN truck and was able to reach a maximum speed of 50km/h thanks to its 29kW engine.
Autocult made the 1/43 scale model, with a price of €135.
Innovation Award
This title was awarded to the Mercedes-Benz 280 SL “Pagoda” model series W 113.
Schuco – a toy manufacturer south Germany – won this award through the creation of a 1/18 scale model by managing to reduce retail pricing from around €160 to less than €100, thanks to a change in production methods.
