Aston upgrades Formula 1 Medical Car from standard DBX to hotter 707 version for 2023 season
Aston Martin has announced that it is pensioning off last year’s DBX Medical Car and replacing it with its latest 520kW Aston Martin DBX707 to support this season’s Formula 1.
Making its debut this weekend at the Bahrain grand prix, the fast Aston SUV is set to share duties with a yet-to-be-announced Mercedes-AMG car, following Aston’s multi-year partnership with Benz to supply both F1’s official safety and medical cars.
Linking it with the British sports car marque’s F1 team, the new Aston Martin DBX707 Medical Car is painted in the same shade of light green paint as the F1 racers.
Featuring an additional 116kW and 200Nm of torque over the standard DBX, the 707 pumps out 520kW/900Nm from its AMG-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8.
Combined with Mercedes-AMG’s nine-speed MCT wet-clutch transmission that ditches a torque converter for quicker changes and allows launch control, the DBX707 is capable of a very rapid 0-100km/h sprint of just 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 310km/h – and every second counts when dashing to a triple-figure shunt in F1.
Alongside the current Aston Martin Vantage Safety Car, the F1-spec DBX707 comes equipped with fire extinguishers, medical equipment and a defibrillator.
Enabling driver Alan van der Merwe and the on-board doctor to communicate with FIA marshals, the DBX707 gets a full comms package that can also remotely monitor the biometric data from drivers in the race.
That allows the on-board medic to judge the severity of a driver’s injuries even before they’ve reached the scene of a collision.
To further protect the occupants in the SUV, F1’s DBX707 comes with special bucket seats and a six-point harness.
There’s even a live TV feed to alert occupants of the Medical Car of any accident and allow them to follow the race closely when they’re not charging to an incident.
AMG has yet to announce what vehicle it will use this F1 season. Last year it used both the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series as the Safety Car and the big Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-Door Coupe as the official medic’s vehicle.
All will be revealed in the build-up to this weekend’s race in Bahrain, which will see Fernando Alonso climb behind the wheel of an Aston Martin for the first time alongside existing works driver Lance Stroll.
