Swansong for Aston Martin’s V12 drop-top boasts epic power and more aggressive styling
Aston Martin’s long farewell to the DBS Superleggera continues with the unveiling of the 2023 Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate Volante – one of the fastest, most aggressive drop-tops it’s ever made.
Standing alongside the coupe as the British marque celebrates its 110th birthday, and marking 75 years since the ‘DB’ nameplate was introduced, the new Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate Volante is similarly described as “the most powerful production Aston Martin ever”.
Limited to just 199 cars, the DBS 770 Ultimate Volante features a twin-turbocharged 5.2-litre V12 wound up to 566kW of power. Maximum torque holds steady at 900Nm.
That power output represents a 33kW increase over the standard DBS and was achieved through the fitment of modified intake and ignition pathways, as well as a seven per cent increase in boost pressure.
The result is a claimed 3.6-second 0-100km/h acceleration time for the Volante and a top speed of 340km/h.
Drive is channelled to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic and a limited-slip differential, however the gearbox has been remapped for snappier shifts.
More than just a power boost, the Ultimate sharpens up the standard DBS chassis.
There’s a new solid-mounted steering column, retuned adaptive damping system and additional body and underbody strengthening that sees front-end stiffness boosted by 25 per cent. A thicker undertray is also said to increase rear-end rigidity by three per cent.
All of this new-found aggression is alluded to by the bespoke 21-inch alloy wheels, massive new horseshoe-shaped bonnet vent, front intakes, splitter and carbon-fibre window trim, windscreen surround, mirror caps, fender louvres, sill elements and rear diffuser.
The enhanced look is continued in the cabin by ‘Sports Plus Seats’ trimmed in full semi-aniline leather and Alcantara, plus carbon-fibre shift paddles, exclusive contrast stitching, a unique arm rest logo and individually numbered scuff plates.
A 499-unit production run comprises 300 coupes and 199 Volantes, however the chances of securing one are next to nil because Aston Martin had already sold them all prior to the reveal.
First global deliveries are expected to commence in the third quarter of this year. It’s not yet known how many of the 499 cars will come to Australia.
The 2023 Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate coupe is priced from £314,000 ($A580,000), with the Volante commanding a £23,000 ($A43,000) premium.
The current DBS Volante is priced at $625,600 plus on-road costs in Australia.
