Subaru’s all-new Legacy and Outback are coming to Canada this fall. The 2020 models offer a host of new tech, turbocharged engines, and pricing that’s climbed a couple of thousand over the outgoing models.

Both cars make the leap to Subaru’s latest platform. The not-exactly-creatively-named Subaru Global Platform is the same one that underpins the latest Impreza. Like its smaller sibling, the all-new Legacy and Outback aren’t revolutionary changes in styling despite the all-new bones underneath.

The base engine is a new 2.5L boxer four that puts out 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. It’s not completely new from last year, but with 90 percent new parts, it’s darn close. It also adds direct injection and start-stop technology to help save fuel.

Buyers wanting more power will be happy to see the return of the turbo. The 2.4L turbo-four from the Ascent will make 260 hp and 277 lb-ft in XT models. All will get Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT.

LED headlights are standard across the board on both the Legacy sedan and Outback wagon. They’ll also get Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist system as standard with adaptive cruise, lane departure, lane keep assist, and lane centering. There’s also Subaru’s available DriverFocus distraction mitigation that watches your eyes to make sure they are watching the road.

The pair will be the first Canadian models to get Subaru’s Starlink connected services. The optional connected car feature comes with a three-year free trial. It uses 4G LTE to allow for voice response technology plus live assistance for automatic collision notifications. Plus SOS emergency assistance and enhanced roadside assistance. Subaru has also given the new models remote engine start, remote lock and unlock, and vehicle locations. Plus the ability to set vehicle boundaries and speed limits, all through an app connected to the car.

The Legacy will come in six trims. Convenience, starting from $26,395, then Touring, Limited, and Premier, all with the 2.5L engine, then Limited GT and Premier GT that get the turbo.

Touring adds 17-inch alloys, LED fogs, auto-dimming mirrors, sunroof, and proximity key plus leather wheel, dual-zone climate, and auto up/down windows. It gets more safety bits too, with reverse automatic braking and blind-spot detection as well as a larger 11.6-inch touchscreen. Limited adds navigation and a Harman Kardon audio system along with leather seats, and a heated wheel. Premium gets Nappa leather, ventilated front chairs, front-view camera, and a CD player.

The lifted wagon Outback is similarly equipped with Convenience starting from $30,695. Then it has the same Touring, Limited, and Premier trims, but the turbo gets Outdoor XT, Limited XT, and Premier XT. Outdoor adds Subaru’s X-Mode off-road modes, a front-view camera, rubber floor mats, soft-touch weatherproof seats, and a full-size spare.
