Unlike the interior, the exterior will take a more evolutionary approach to design.
The all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class mid-size luxury sedan will be officially revealed tomorrow, but the German automaker has seen fit to tease the new BMW 5 Series rival once more before taking the covers off completely. The three images show one of the new wheel designs, the restyled headlights, and the lower intake section on the front bumper.
The new headlights with their curved lower section were spied before, and this element has remained in the official image. While not necessarily as distinctive as the separate headlight clusters of the original W212 E-Class, this change does distinguish the new W214 model from the smaller C-Class and larger S-Class. Look closely, and we can also see that this model has the high-tech Digital Light headlamps that are an option on the latest C-Class.
Mercedes says that these new Digital Light headlamps create light that looks more like natural daylight, and it can also project visual alerts into the driver’s view. On top-spec E-Class models, this feature might be standard.
The multi-spoke wheels have a black finish and are shod in Michelin tires, and while they look good, we’re less convinced by the faux lower intakes with small Mercedes star detailing on them. Perhaps this element will look better when viewed as part of the front fascia as a whole.
Based on previous spy shots, the new E-Class will be very much evolutionary in its silhouette, something which should please the generally conservative clientele that will go for a larger luxury sedan.
Earlier in 2023, Mercedes fully revealed the interior of the new E-Class, which comes with an expansive Superscreen. It differs slightly from the Hyperscreen found in the EQS in that the digital instrument cluster is displayed in a separate, more upright housing. However, the large center touchscreen and passenger-side display remain.
The rest of the interior includes a new steering wheel and a striking ambient lighting system. Other changes inside the interior are improved voice controls and 5G capability. The fitment of a new selfie camera makes sense for participating in Zoom calls from your car, but we do wonder what percentage of E-Class buyers will care about the integration of TikTok.
Several four-cylinder engines will be available for the E-Class, while the sporty E63 is rumored to use an inline-six engine with a plug-in hybrid system. As the world moves over to electric power, it's highly likely that this will be the last gas-powered E-Class ever.
