Toyota continues to be South Africa’s favourite car brand, largely thanks to a line-up of affordable and reliable models.
We looked at Toyota’s five most affordable cars to see what the brand’s entry-level vehicles have to offer.
Toyota Agya – R192,300
The most affordable vehicle on offer from Toyota in South Africa, the Agya, sports a 1.0-litre petrol engine providing 49kW and 89Nm – giving it an impressive combined fuel consumption of 4.8l/100km.
The hatch is available with either a five-speed manual gearbox or four-speed automatic transmission.
Perched on 14-inch alloy wheels, this hatchback has LED headlights and tail lights, a rear window wiper, a rear spoiler, and colour-coded bumpers, door handles, and side mirrors with indicators.
In addition, standard interior features include a manual air conditioner, three cup holders, and Toyota Connect support – while an audio system is an optional extra in the entry-level Agya.
The models with this fitted – called the Agya Audio – get a Bluetooth-capable sound system playing through two speakers.
The Toyota Agya has a standard 3-year/100,000km warranty and 2-service/20,000km service plan.
Toyota Starlet – R225,200
The Starlet has a 1.4-litre petrol engine producing 68kW and 130Nm, giving the hatch a combined consumption of 5.1l/100km.
Motorists can choose between a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.
The exterior features 15-inch steel wheels, halogen headlights, LED rear lights, and colour-coded bumpers and door handles.
Fabric seats, a manual AC, a multifunction steering wheel, vehicle-stability control, and a six-speaker Bluetooth sound system are included as standard.
The XR version – for an additional R58,900 – throws in a host of extras such as alloy wheels, chrome door handles, LED headlights, side mirror indicators, a leather steering wheel, cruise control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and hill-assist control.
The Toyota Starlet comes with a standard 3-year/100,000km warranty and 3-service/45,000km service plan.
Toyota Rumion – R258,000
This seven-seater MPV has fabric upholstery, ventilated cupholders, a manual AC, front power sockets, and Toyota Connect support – available with a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Rumion runs on a 1.5-litre petrol engine giving it a consumption of 6.2l/100km and an output of 77kW and 138Nm.
On the exterior, the base model has halogen headlights, rear LED fog lights, a black grille, and 15-inch steel wheels.
Upgrading to the TX version – for R58,800 more – will add alloy wheels, a chrome grille and door handles, retractable side mirrors, front fog lights, a rear window wiper, mudguards, wood-patterned interior panelling, leather steering wheel, two-zone automatic AC, rear camera, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear power sockets, USB port, six speakers, and rear park distance control.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – R272,200
The most affordable crossover available from Toyota is the Urban Cruiser, powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine delivering 77kW and 138Nm.
This gives the Cruiser a combined fuel consumption of 6.2l/100km, which can be managed by a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
Sitting on 16-inch steel wheels, this crossover sports a chrome grille, LED headlights and rear lights, LED daytime running lights, retractable side mirrors, and a rear spoiler.
Inside, you’ll find a four-speaker infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, USB ports, fabric seats, manual air conditioning, a multifunction steering wheel, and rear park-assist control.
The top-of-the-line XR version – for an extra R48,100 – will add a leather steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, a reverse camera, cruise control, six speakers instead of four, a two-tone colour scheme on the exterior, and alloy wheels.

The Corolla Quest is Toyota’s entry-level sedan.
In terms of styling, you can expect daytime-running lights, rear fog lamps, halogen headlights, and 15-inch steel wheels.
Under the hood is a 1.8-litre petrol engine providing 103kW and 173Nm, with a combined fuel consumption of 7.0l/100km.
The car then uses a six-speed manual transmission, with CVT versions also available.
