An advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain and a much more modern interior are on the way for VW's best-seller.
Volkswagen's most popular individual model in the United States is the Tiguan crossover, so this third-generation model, which has yet to be fully revealed, is rather important. With newer rivals like the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-50 now on sale, the next Tiguan will need to step up its game. Although it will still have gas running through its veins, the new Tiguan will be available with a plug-in hybrid option, along with advanced features like adaptive chassis control. In America, the new Tiguan will be a rebadged version of the next Tayron, an SUV that is currently sold in China, so it will look different from Tiguans available in Europe and the UK. We can also expect an interior that will be more digital than ever before. This may very well be the final gas-powered Tiguan ever, and it has big shoes to fill.
When Is The 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan Coming Out?
The world premiere of the Volkswagen Tiguan – the one heading to the UK – is scheduled for the end of the third quarter of 2023. The release date for this version of the Volkswagen Tiguan is set for sometime in 2024. As for the new Tayron, that is only coming out in the UK in 2025 as a successor to the Tiguan Allspace sold there.
In the USA, the new Tiguan will likely be coming out as either a 2024 or 2025 model – we await confirmation from the automaker. Remember, the local version will differ from the Tiguan sold in other markets like the UK and be closely related to the next Tayron.
What’s The Price Of The 2024 Tiguan?
The price of the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan will only be published closer to its on-sale date, but it'll likely start at a bit more than the $26,950 you'll pay for the base 2023 version. However, it should still begin at below $30k. The new plug-in hybrid model will probably be the priciest, possibly going up to around $45,000 or so when fully loaded.
Rivals include the new Honda CR-V that starts at an MSRP of $29,500, but if the more conservative Japanese and German entrants don't interest you, Kia also has the striking new Sportage as an alternative. This Korean starts at a cost of $38,690 in PHEV guise.
New Volkswagen Tiguan Exterior And Colors
Although official teasers shared by Volkswagen have given us an idea of the new Tiguan's exterior design language, these images are of the model that will be sold in other markets like the UK. In America, the next Tiguan will be a rebadged version of the new seven-seat Tayron, so it will sport unique styling. As for how similar these two unique Tiguans will be aesthetically, well, we can only speculate, but we expect the family ties to be obvious enough.
The UK-bound Tiguan won't break any new ground. That's generally the VW way of doing things, though, and many customers will probably appreciate the modern but uncluttered lines that should free up a decent amount of space in the cabin.
A more expressive, coupe-style version of the Tiguan is expected to reach America. It's likely to share its appearance with the next Tayron X. The current Tayron sold in China (pictured below in white) has a more butch, less curvy design than the teased Tiguan; the latter resembles the ID.4 with its full-width light bar and available HD matrix headlights. America's Tiguan will also have a different profile as it will be configured for a third row, so its body will be longer.
Exterior colors for the VW Tiguan are unknown at this stage, but the automaker will probably stick to demure hues like Pure White, Deep Black pearl, and Platinum Gray, as found on the existing model. Perhaps a more vibrant red or blue will also be on the menu for the 2024 Tiguan.
Volkswagen Tiguan Dimensions
The dimensions of the new Volkswagen Tiguan crossover are larger than that of its predecessor, with VW saying that the length has been increased by almost 1.2 inches. However, this change is in reference to the short-wheelbase Tiguan without seven seats that is available in other markets, whereas the United States only gets the long-wheelbase version.
Overall, the new Tiguan destined for our shores will probably be a little larger than the current one sold here – already one of the larger offerings in its class – which has a length of 186.1 inches (stretched over a 109.9-inch wheelbase), a width of 72.4 inches without the mirrors, and a height of up to 66.5 inches.
The current Tiguan weighs up to 3,821 pounds, but the new PHEV model will probably be closer to 4,300 lbs or so.
Volkswagen Tiguan Engine And Performance
The MQB evo architecture of the new Tiguan will make it compatible with several different drive types. America's version will likely stick the Volkswagen Tiguan with a turbocharged gas engine, hopefully with a bit more grunt than the current model's 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque.
Mild hybrid models, turbodiesels, and a PHEV known as an eHybrid will also be available on the Tiguan sold overseas, but the diesel models won't be offered here. It's not known what the outputs of these powertrains will be, but the Kia Sportage PHEV makes 261 hp, and reports suggest that the Tiguan PHEV will make up to 268 hp.
The current Tiguan needs a languid nine seconds, give or take, for the 0-60 mph sprint, but we hope that the most powerful versions of the new one will shave at least two seconds off that time.
VW has also promised a new active chassis control system that should help the Tiguan deliver superior on-road dynamics to its competitors. We expect front- and all-wheel-drive variants to be available, and VW says that an automatic shift gearbox will be offered exclusively.
Gas Mileage/Range, Charging, And Battery Life
The big news here is that VW has promised around 62 miles of all-electric range for the new Tiguan PHEV, which holds much promise for the US-bound model. Actual EPA ratings will probably be lower, but that is still an excellent all-electric range for a crossover in this segment. For the first time, DC charging will be possible for these hybrids, as will faster AC charging for all eHybrids. VW hasn't yet specified what the battery specs of the PHEV are.
Efficiency should be improved across the lineup with the latest powertrains, possibly improving on the 27 mpg combined that the current Tiguan FWD can achieve.
Volkswagen Tiguan Interior And Cargo
A more modern and sophisticated interior for the Volkswagen Tiguan in other markets has already been shown by the manufacturer, and it has all the upgrades we expect of a new-generation crossover. The model destined for the USA will be at least as advanced as what we can see here. Gone is the current model's tiny standard touchscreen interface, replaced instead with a brand-new infotainment interface with a screen diagonal of 15 inches. It's not clear if this large screen will be standard inside all models across the lineup.
Lower down on the center console is the Driving Experience Control setup with a rotary controller and its own small screen. Using this, drivers can manipulate functions like the radio's volume or the ambient lighting system. Naturally, there is a digital driver's display as well. Fortunately, some analog controls will be present in the Tiguan as VW tries to improve its new vehicles' sometimes fussy ergonomics.
To improve comfort, the seats in the Volkswagen Tiguan have been redesigned, and there has been a greater emphasis on noise insulation, which will be most appreciated when using the plug-in hybrid model in its fully electric mode. The optional ergoActive front seats come with features typically associated with cars in segments above, like pneumatic 10-chamber pressure point massage functions in the backrests, along with heating and ventilation. From the pictures, the seats appear to be finished in a mix of synthetic leather and soft suede-like material.
Elsewhere, the gear position is now changed via a steering column switch close to the steering wheel, as it is on the brand's fully electric ID. models. Paddle shifters will also be available. Remember, these are all features relevant to the new Tiguan that will be sold overseas, so not every change can be confirmed for the model that will come to America.
Cargo space in the longer Volkswagen Tiguan that will be sold here should at least match the 33 cubic feet behind the second row of the current model.
