The all-new Tacoma will likely compete with the upcoming Ford Ranger for best-in-class honors.
The current Toyota Tacoma is long overdue for replacement, but its ruggedness and a strong reputation for reliability have kept it in contention in the mid-size pickup segment even at the end of its life. Fortunately, an all-new Tacoma is imminent and is expected to bring with it more efficient engines, new styling, and a capable Trailhunter trim that will likely be an exceptional off-roader. Americans will soon be treated to an all-new Ford Ranger as well, and together with the completely redesigned Chevrolet Colorado, it’s shaping up to be a heated battle in this battle of the mid-size trucks.

When Is The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Coming Out?
While it will be revealed on May 19, the official release date for the new Toyota Tacoma pickup truck is unknown at this stage, but it’s expected to be coming out as a 2024 model. Hopefully, that means it will start reaching customers in the USA before the end of 2023.
What’s The Price Of The 2024 Toyota Tacoma?
As with other aspects of the new-generation truck, the price of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma has not been communicated as yet. The 2023 Tacoma starts at $28,250 for the SR trim with the less practical Access Cab body style, so we expect the new one to begin at an MSRP of around $30,000.
With a new hybrid powertrain, the Tacoma is likely to cost quite a bit more at the higher end of the lineup, with fully loaded models probably exceeding $55,000.
The mid-size truck segment is undergoing quite a metamorphosis, with Nissan debuting a new Frontier for the 2022 model year and Chevrolet doing the same with the Colorado for 2023. But it’s the upcoming Ford Ranger – already on sale in some other markets – that we expect to be one of the Tacoma’s fiercest rivals.

New Toyota Tacoma Exterior And Colors
Although we’ve seen small sections of the Toyota Tacoma’s new exterior thanks to the Japanese company’s fun teaser campaign, the most revealing shot of all came via a leak from an online forum. In it, we can see that the Tacoma closely mirrors the new Tundra, and that’s no bad thing. It looks every bit the masculine pickup with its sporty grille, new headlights, and black pillars. The derivative that was spied below looks a lot like a TRD Pro with its flared fenders, hood scoop, and TOYOTA grille – the insignia on the grille includes a horizontal light bar below it.
Previously, Toyota also teased both Access and Double Cab models, so it seems that both body styles will once more be made available. We know that a new Trailhunter off-road trim is coming with extras like a tow hook and other accessories from ARB, and Satin Brown paintwork. We don’t know what other colors the Toyota Tacoma will come in, but perhaps it will inherit a few shades from the Tundra, such as Ice Cap (white), Magnetic Gray, Celestial Silver, and Midnight Black.
Off-road models are likely to come with chunkier tires and a front skid plate, but another cool feature that will appeal to a wide audience is the removable tailgate speaker that was teased by Toyota.
Toyota Tacoma Dimensions
Riding on the new TNGA-F platform, the dimensions of the Toyota Tacoma are likely to increase slightly. Official specs haven’t been shared, but we can use the 2023 model as a gauge. The 2023 Tacoma Double Cab has a length of 212.3 inches, a width of 74.4 inches, and a height of 70.6 inches. Its wheelbase stretches to 127.4 inches, and the bed length is 60.5 inches.
With a new hybrid powertrain option, the new Tacoma will probably be a bit heavier than the current model, which starts at 4,445 pounds in SR Double Cab guise.

Toyota Tacoma Engine And Performance
As with the Tundra, the engine lineup in the Toyota Tacoma will likely receive a complete revamp. We know that the i-Force MAX hybrid powertrain will be available, if not standard, but no outputs have been confirmed.
In the larger Tundra, the i-Force MAX pairs a twin-turbocharged V6 engine with an electric motor to develop 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. This setup includes a ten-speed automatic transmission in the Tundra, but it’s possible that the i-Force MAX will be downtuned for use in the Tacoma. Toyota could also use the Hybrid MAX powertrain from the Crown, and here 340 hp is developed from the combination of a 2.4-liter turbo-four and an electric motor.
A non-hybrid turbocharged four-cylinder engine is likely to do duty lower in the range, and hopefully, Toyota will do away with the disappointingly underpowered base engine, which makes just 159 horses and takes frustratingly long to get from 0-60 mph. Toyota has already confirmed that the new Tacoma will continue to be available with a manual gearbox. That’s great news, but Toyota will also need to replace the dated six-speed automatic in the 2023 model if it wants to remain competitive.
As before, we expect both 4×2 and 4×4 variants of the Tacoma to be offered. For more intense off-roading adventures, the TRD Pro will be coming with Fox QS3 shocks, and these should come with a three-position compression damping adjustment system.
Gas Mileage
EPA estimates will only be published closer to the truck’s on-sale date, and once we know for certain what powertrains will be offered. In the Tundra, the hybrid powertrain delivers 22 mpg combined, and in the lighter body of the Tacoma, those numbers should improve with the same engine. The current Tacoma’s old-school V6 returns a best figure of 21 mpg, as does its base four-cylinder mill.
Assuming the same tank size but greater efficiency, the new Tacoma should get closer to 500 miles on a full tank in a best-case scenario.

Toyota Tacoma Interior And Cargo
This is another area where we are hoping that the new Tacoma is an improvement. The current Toyota Tacoma’s interior suffers from poor space utilization (especially for those in the second row) and tough but uninspiring materials, and the design itself is quite drab.
Based on the big step up from the previous Tundra to the new one, the smaller Tacoma should follow suit. While it won’t be quite as luxurious as the Tundra, the new Tacoma should have classier materials, a new multimedia system (possibly with the Tundra’s available 14-inch touchscreen), and smarter storage solutions.
Base Toyota Tacoma models will have seats finished in fabric, likely making way for the brand’s SofTex upholstery on upper trims. Amenities like heated seats and a nicer sound system should be available, too.
As with the Tundra, we hope to see the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite come as standard with its pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, and lane departure alert.
Cargo space in the new Toyota Tacoma will likely increase if the truck grows larger, but that’s yet to be confirmed. The current model has both five- and six-foot beds.
