Toyota Tacoma recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in the United States, and to mark three decades of robust dependability, Toyota has released a new Tacoma. The 2024 Toyota Tacoma has an entirely new design language, and it is built on the renowned TNGA-F platform. Toyota expects the fourth generation of its pick-up, which includes a new “Trailhunter” variant, will help it maintain its leadership in the rising midsize pickup market in the United States. The pickup still has a stick shift, which is odd given that almost none of Tacoma’s midsize truck competitors has one, and the gearbox type is generally vanishing from the market.
The 2024 Tacoma will be offered in the following trim levels: SR, SR5, a new TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, a new Trailhunter, and TRD Pro.
2024 Toyota Tacoma: Design and Platform
The new Tacoma is outfitted with squarish headlights and neat LED DRLs, a tall front bumper with side air vents, and a big grille with a giant Toyota emblem in the centre. Lower trims like the Tacoma Sport have more black trim on the nose, while top trims get more chrome on the front, sides, and alloy wheels. It receives a butch appearance up front with boxy proportions, and the bumper design and C-shaped taillights are also new.
Toyota’s writing replaces the emblem on the grille of the Tacoma’s rougher models, the TRD Pro and the Tacoma Trailhunter. These models also have distinctive front skid plates, horizontal LED daytime running lights, and hefty wheel and tyre setups in black or bronze, depending on the variant.
Toyota’s TNGA-F global truck platform underpins the new Tacoma, as well as the all-new Tundra and Sequoia. High-strength steel with blanking and laser welds is used throughout the chassis, much like its full-size cousin, to boost stiffness over the previous generation, while aluminium is utilized on the upper body to minimize weight.
2024 Toyota Tacoma: Drivetrains and Engines
The new Tacoma comes with four powertrain options. The most basic of which is a 231PS/329Nm of torque, 2.4-litre petrol engine coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Following that is the same 2.4-litre engine with 274PS/420Nm of torque and a 6-speed rev-matching manual transmission. The automatic transmission option on the higher power 2.4-litre engine produces 282PS/430Nm of torque. The top-of-the-line Tacoma comes with a 2.4-litre petrol hybrid engine with a 1.9 kW battery and a 48PS electric motor, for a total power of 330PS/630Nm of torque.
On mid-spec Tacoma models, four-wheel drive with an electronically adjustable transfer case (two-speed) and low-range gearing are available, while the top-spec Tacoma model with hybrid powertrain comes standard with full-time four-wheel drive and a centre locking differential.
A newly optional multi-link rear suspension improves the ride and handling qualities of the Tacoma. The previous model’s leaf springs are replaced by a series of coils in this design. Leaf springs, on the other hand, remain standard on the SR, SR5 XtraCab, and TRD PreRunner grades.
2024 Toyota Tacoma: Interiors
An 8-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 7-inch instrument cluster are standard on the interior. Higher versions, on the other hand, come with a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster. Notable features include a Qi wireless phone charger, a digital rearview mirror, a suspended and stabilized driver seat, a 10-speaker JBL system with a detachable JBL Bluetooth speaker, wireless Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.
While the Tacoma will not be available in India, its hybrid powertrain, with a different power output, may find its way into the next-generation Fortuner and Hilux in various regions, including India.
