The new Chevrolet Traverse comes with a turbo four-cylinder and an off-road Z71 model.
Buyers in the USA shopping in the midsize SUV segment may have lingered longer over the Chevrolet Traverse's competitors of late. Despite oodles of space and relative comfort, a strong engine, and favorable safety reviews, the Traverse wasn't particularly striking. Fortunately, the arrival of the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse sees substantial changes, bringing with it a much better-looking car, a new engine promising improved performance and efficiency, and an interior that you may actually want to spend time in. And if you're the type to spend your weekends out in the wild chewing up rocky terrain, you can now do it in a Traverse because the lineup now includes an off-road-ready Z71 trim. The new turbo-four engine makes 315 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque – good increases over the old V6 model – but is it enough to draw buyers away from the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade?

When Is The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse Coming Out?
As far as a release date for the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse goes, the automaker says it will be available in early 2024 in the USA.
2024 Chevrolet Traverse Price And Competition
There's no official word on the price of the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, which will likely only be made known closer to its release, but considering the outgoing model started at $34,520, it can be safely assumed that the new version will be slightly more expensive. Four trims will be available in the lineup for 2024, starting with the LS and LT, and a first-for-Traverse Z71 near the top. The range closes off with the RS trim. It's safe to expect a starting price for the new Chevy Traverse of around $37k, with the Z71 and RS adding up to $10k to that.
Mid-size rivals to the Chevy Traverse include the Kia Telluride and Mazda CX-90, but buyers could also cross-shop the Ford Explorer Timberline against the new off-road-focused Z71. While the Mazda CX-90 is priced from just under $40k, the Telluride has a base cost of $35,990. The Explorer Timberline costs around $49k for 2023.

New Chevrolet Traverse Exterior And Colors
The Chevrolet Traverse SUV is new in many ways, with its appearance being the most obvious. It's available in four trims for 2024, and these also vary in grille design. The base model features a simple black grille, the LT gets vertical chrome slats, and the Z71 and RS get a blacked-out mesh-look grille with a black bowtie emblem that makes this SUV look pretty attractive.
New features common to all, however, include the squared-off grille underneath the updated split headlights, the C-pillar/rear window split, and three new exterior paint colors: Lakeshore Blue, Stardust, and Harvest Bronze. The rest of the exterior color palette for the Chevrolet Traverse includes Summit White, Mosaic Black, Sterling Gray, Iridescent Pearl Tricoat, and Radiant Red Tintcoat. The entry-level trim is limited to only the first three of these, plus Lakeshore Blue.
A panoramic dual-glass sunroof with a power sunshade is available on LT and Z71 models while it comes standard on the RS. All models get LED head- and taillights and a dual-exhaust system with bright chrome quad tips. Roof rails come standard from the LT model, and the Z71 gets a skid plate, tow hooks, and trailering equipment off the factory floor. 18-inch wheels are standard across the first three trims – with the Z71 getting high-gloss black machined-face wheels and all-terrain tires to suit its off-road brief – while the top-spec RS has 22-inch wheels filling the arches.
Chevrolet Traverse Dimensions
Dimensions for the new Chevrolet Traverse haven't been released, but we can assume it'll be similar to the outgoing model, possibly with minor differences for the more rugged and luxurious trims. The current model has a total length of 205.9 inches stretched over a 120.9-inch wheelbase to accommodate three rows of seating. It's 78.6 inches wide and has a height of 70.7 inches. The standard 7.5 inches of ground clearance is increased by an inch on the Z71 model.
The same is expected to apply to the curb weight for the new Traverse – and it was already a hefty beast, ranging between 4,700 pounds and 4,956 lbs with all-wheel drive. Hovering around the 5,000-lbs mark wouldn't be unrealistic.

Chevrolet Traverse Engine And Performance
Gone is the 3.6-liter V6 from the outgoing model, and the 2024 Traverse range now gets an all-new 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that brings with it a solid increase in power specs. New outputs are 315 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, up from 310 hp and 266 lb-ft. There's no indication of what 0-60 mph times are, but it's reasonable to expect an improvement, considering the improved torque figure, particularly.
An eight-speed automatic transmission does duty across the range, and while front-wheel drive is standard, AWD is available to all trims, although it's the only option on the Z71. This model also gets a twin-clutch setup to optimize traction in off-road conditions, along with a Terrain Mode. In this configuration, the suspension dampers help to keep the ride smooth over rougher surfaces.
The new engine in the Chevrolet Traverse should improve performance and efficiency, but it doesn't change the towing capacity. The Chevy SUV can still only tow up to 5,000 lbs, when correctly equipped.
The Traverse is likely to spend its time in the city, though, ferrying humans around, and so it's equipped with more standard safety features and driver assistance tech than before. New additions to the available features list for 2024 include rear pedestrian alert, adaptive cruise control, side bicyclist alert, and intersection automatic emergency braking. This supplements the standard fare, which includes a following distance indicator, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, rear park assist, an HD rear vision camera, blind zone steering assist, and traffic sign recognition. Super Cruise hands-free driving is also available.
Gas Mileage
Although the automaker hasn't released gas mileage figures for the new Chevrolet Traverse SUV just yet, it's a safe bet to say it will be more efficient than the outgoing V6 mill that was rather thirsty. That powertrain resulted in mpg figures for the FWD Chevrolet Traverse of 18/27/21 mpg on city/highway/combined cycles. This drops to 17/25/20 mpg with AWD. The new turbo-four will likely improve on this, although the higher outputs and the heft of the Traverse won't be doing it any favors.

Chevrolet Traverse Interior And Cargo
The interior space of the Chevrolet Traverse looks nothing like it used to, and that's a good thing. Whereas the cockpit was slightly dowdy and generic before, it now exudes a modern, tech-forward, and stylish feel. The dashboard has been redesigned and sports a massive, best-in-class central display that manages the infotainment system. It's 17.7 inches in size – twice as large as the biggest screen previously available – and it comes installed with all the necessary audio and smartphone goodies. An 11-inch configurable driver information cluster is also standard, and a Bose sound system is equipped to the top trim.
Materials used inside the Traverse are a step up, too. Higher trims naturally get the cream of the crop: the RS comes with leather upholstery in the first and second rows, while the LT and Z71 are available with premium Evotex upholstery. Base models come with cloth upholstery, available in just one color – black. One step up opens more options in the form of premium cloth or Evotex in Jet Black, although there is an option to break the black theme with Jet Back/Gideon/Very Dark Atmosphere scheme, which admittedly sounds just as dark. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather from the LT upward, and the RS boasts red accents throughout the cabin, as seen below, to go with the Torch Red contrast stitching.

While seating for eight passengers is standard, top-spec models switch out for seven-passenger seating with a bit more space. An eight-passenger seat configuration in the Chevrolet Traverse remains optional throughout, though. From the pictures of the RS model here, we can see how this makes for a classy and executive feeling in the middle row. It is evident, however, that the design of the C-pillar's window makes it feel quite dark and constricted in the back row.
The automaker assures buyers that, regardless of configuration, access to this back row isn't problematic. With the captain's chairs equipped, SmartSlide access makes it even easier. The RS gets one-touch folding for the second row and a power-folding third-row, too. The steering wheel and first two rows of seats can be heated.
The interior redesign sees many useful nooks and crannies made available to store small items, and together with conveniences like wireless charging and side-by-side cupholders, there's also a pass-through console, and a large armrest bin between the driver and front passenger. Cargo space in the Chevy Traverse maxes out at 98 cubic feet with all the seats folded away – GM says this is still class-leading, even though this hasn't changed from the old model to the new one.
