Ford’s new-generation Ranger might be getting all the headlines right now, but Toyota is keeping its HiLux in the conversation with a new update to Australia’s most-popular car.
Not much has changed though, with the SR extra-cab and double-cab versions of the HiLux now fitted with 17-inch black-coloured alloy wheels instead of the steel wheels as featured before.
The SR also scores body-coloured door handles, making the affordable grade of the HiLux a little more upmarket.
On the other end of the spectrum, the SR5 double-cab pick-up gains puddle lamps, though it comes at the cost of heated side mirrors, as well as an ‘ID Box anti-theft immobiliser’ instead of a standard steering column lock for added security.
Safety systems of the SR5 grades and up have also been improved, with the inclusion of blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and a surround-view camera.
However, the changes will come at a price.
All affected grades will move up $1250 in line with the equipment changes, while the only option available to the new HiLux line-up is premium paint for an extra $675.
As before, the HiLux is powered a trio of engines.
The base Workmate is offered with either a 122kW/245Nm 2.7-litre petrol four-cylinder engine, or a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel that produces 110kW/400Nm.
SR, SR5 and SR+ variants meanwhile, score a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine that punches out 150kW at 3400rpm.
Torque however, varies depending on transmission, with six-speed manual-equipped vehicles tuned to 420Nm, while automatic versions have 500Nm.
As previously reported, the Rugged X flagship is now discontinued, and it will be replaced with what Toyota calls an “apex off-road variant” designed to take the fight directly to the Ford Ranger Raptor.
