The so-called 911 Safari is still being tested by Porsche. The prototypes of the German brand’s unusual model come and vanish, this time sought in the rain at the Nürburgring track, one of the brand’s traditional development routes.
The development of one of the most exclusive Porsche 911 variants in recent memory has taken just over a year, almost exactly one year after an internal prototype of the Porsche 911 Safari with an unprecedented configuration was revealed, indicating that the sports firm had considered it for the 991 generation.
A choice that appears to have a much clearer launch today, albeit it is not likely to happen anytime soon, given the more than twelve months that its prototypes have been accumulating in testing and in various settings. A few spy images have been missing for a few months. They confirm that the set-up has halted and that it is continuing, this time captured in the rain and on one of the frequent test routes near the Nürburgring track, with no new information compared to earlier sightings.
A unique edition of the Porsche 911 Safari is planned for 2023.
And it’s that, despite the fact that the unique model’s development is obvious, Porsche fails to account for any distinctive details. We can only conclude that the increased height of the body to the ground is one of the distinguishing features of this vehicle based on the 911 Carrera 4S, indicating that it will be equipped with all-wheel drive. The new photographs also show certain tires that are not only bigger, but also have thicker sidewalls to withstand more weight and off-road driving.
However, there is still a huge space between the tires and the wheel arches, indicating that the suspension has been tweaked to allow for more travel from the springs and shock absorbers, almost to the level of an SUV.
In summary, the same look as previous units, including the rear bumper from the “SportDesign” special kit. A year in which certain interim improvements riveted on the wheel arches, reaching to the margins of the front bumper, are still visible.
Indications are pointing to a limited and highly unique edition of units arriving in 2023, and you’ll be able to enjoy driving dynamics that are as sporty as the 911 but also designed to roll off the tarmac and onto small gravel roads. The same Carrera engine is likely to stay under the hood, a six-cylinder in-line in boxer configuration with a maximum output of 385 horsepower and a 7-speed PDK automated transmission.
