Electrified luxury limo lands with all-electric range of up to 100km and plenty of performance for captains of industry
Mercedes-Benz has launched the new 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S 580e, a new plug-in hybrid version of the German brand’s ultra-luxurious Rolls-Royce Phantom rival.
Borrowing its powertrain from the Mercedes-Benz S 580e, the more opulent Maybach version combines a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline six-cylinder with a 28.6kWh battery. Combined, the petrol-electric hybrid produces 375kW of power and 750Nm of torque.
Benz says that’s enough for a brisk 0-100km/h sprint time of just 5.1 seconds and a 250km/h top speed, although most will buy the plug-in limo for its respectable 100km of pure-electric range.
Easily making it the most efficient Maybach ever, the Benz-owned German brand says the first Maybach PHEV is capable of averaging 0.8L/100km while emitting just 18g/km of CO2 on the WLTP test cycle – not that the big limo shouts about its newfound eco-credentials.
Differing from the regular V8-powered S 580 and the V12-powered S 680, the plug-in S 580 gets an additional charging port and blue colour accents within its headlights – and that’s it.
According to Mercedes-Benz, as well as a useful zero-emissions range, its luxurious new plug-in flagship sedan can receive a fast DC charge of up to 60kW – this means a full charge from empty takes around 30 minutes.
For home-charging, an 11kW on-board charger is fitted as standard.
Full pricing has yet to be announced, but Mercedes-Maybach has confirmed the S 580e will be first launched in China, followed by Thailand, Europe and other countries, but has not yet specified whether or not the plug-in limo will be on the menu for Australians.
Before the first hybrid Maybach arrives, the luxury limo-maker is set to launch its first EV before the end of the 2023. Details around what model that will be are yet to be released, but it’s thought it will be a production version of the Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS.
