The 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has a revised engine lineup. Engine options include:
- Turbo 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder gas: 188 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque
- Turbo 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder diesel: 168 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque
- Twin-turbo 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder diesel: 208 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque
For the 2023 Sprinter, the standard engine continues to be the gas-powered turbo 2.0L inline-four. It no longer offers the turbo-diesel 3.0L V-6 from the 2022 Sprinter. The new engine additions for the 2023 model are the two variations of the turbo-diesel I-4, which is also known as the OM654.
New all-wheel drive system for the 2023 Sprinter
Another new addition for the 2023 Sprinter is the automatic full-time all-wheel drive (AWD). It replaces the selectable four-wheel drive (4WD) system from the 2022 Sprinter. Mercedes-Benz claims that the new AWD system provides “more power, endurance, and overall seamless transition for the customer, allowing them to take on any terrain with ease.” While the 2023 Sprinter is not a serious off-roader, it provides greater all-terrain capabilities than its competitors, such as the Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster.
2023 Sprinter: New nine-speed automatic transmission
The third major change for the 2023 Sprinter is the new 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission. It replaces the seven-speed 7G-Tronic from the 2022 Sprinter. According to Mercedes-Benz, the new nine-speed transmission provides “increased driving comfort, reduction in fuel consumption, decreased noise levels, lower emissions, higher overall gear ratio, and quicker downshifts allowing for agile acceleration.”
The exterior and interior design for the 2023 Sprinter remains the same. It still offers a high level of customization and configuration, as well as a cavernous interior, including up to 533 cu-ft for the Extended Cargo Van. Also, the 2023 Sprinter is more refined and comfortable than its competitors, with a liberal use of high-quality materials.
