The new 2022 Subaru BRZ promises more power and more style, the manufacturer has announced.
The sports car will receive an upgraded 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated Boxer engine which produces 170kW and 249Nm of torque, while handling will be improved thanks to enhanced chassis dynamics.
Drivers will be pleased to hear that the car retains its front-engine and rear-wheel drive layout, with the option of a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission available.
Additionally, the BRZ will once again be developed in partnership with Toyota – whose Toyota-badged version of the vehicle is the “86”.
Subaru added that the US model of the new BRZ will go on sale first, in 2021.
Enhanced power and handling
By adding a 2.4-litre Boxer engine to the new model, drivers will receive more power compared to the 147kW which is available in the current BRZ/86.
“By expanding the displacement, thoroughly strengthening intake/exhaust efficiency, and reducing friction, this engine delivers a 15% increase in torque over the previous model,” said Subaru.
“With a smooth-revving feel and sharp throttle response, the engine provides stronger acceleration and a noticeable increase in power.”
Models which use the 6-speed automatic transmission will also receive a refined Sport Mode.
“When the car detects the driver’s intention for sporty driving, the transmission automatically selects and holds an appropriate gear to make cornering feel more direct,” added the company.
The handling of the BRZ is another area which has received improvements, with the body of the car now “delivering a 60% increase in front lateral bending rigidity and a 50% increase in torsional stiffness”.
This stiffness allows for improved steering response, better handling, and better traction in cornering.
Lowering the weight
To make up for the increased weight of the bigger engine, Subaru has made the BRZ’s roof, front fenders, and hood out of aluminum.
Additionally, this contributes to an “optimised weight layout” which lowers the car’s centre of gravity.
The wheels and tyres fitted then depend on whether you take the “Premium” or “Limited” edition of the new BRZ.

On the inside, the BRZ has received an instrument panel which consists of a 7-inch TFT display and digital gauge cluster.
This is complemented by a Subaru Starlink media centre with 8-inch display and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Finally, models fitted with the automatic transmission will receive “EyeSight Driver Assist Technology” that includes pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise control support.
