The first product from Swedish-Chinese company Polestar – formerly solely the performance division of Volvo – will be priced from $59,900 plus on-road costs locally. Due to go on sale in Australia in January 2022, the 2022 Polestar 2 will be offered in three variants with up to 300kW of power and 660Nm of torque in the Long Range Dual-Motor variant, while up to 540km of range is achievable on the mid-level Long Range Single-Motor variant.

As the first product to be launched in Australia under the Polestar name, the 2021 Polestar 2 is priced aggressively at $59,900 plus on-road costs ($64,597 drive away in NSW) for the Standard Range Single-Motor variant, which uses a 61kWh battery, produces 165kW/330Nm and offers 440km of WLTP range.
The mid-spec Long Range Single-Motor variant is priced $5,000 higher at $64,900 plus on-road costs ($69,847 drive away in NSW) and uses a larger 75kWh battery with 170kW/330Nm outputs. It offers the most range of the Polestar 2 range at 540km (WLTP). The Single-Motor variants sprint from 0-100km/h in 7.4 seconds.
At the top of the range is the Long Range Dual-Motor, which is priced at $69,900 plus on-road costs ($75,097 drive away in NSW). This model uses the same 75kWh battery as the mid-spec car, though its performance climbs considerably to 300kW/660Nm – though its range falls slightly to 480km (WLTP). The Dual-Motor car hits 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds and all models can tow up to 1,500kg.
Crucially for buyers in states with EV incentives, the Polestar 2’s pricing falls below the threshold for some discounting – in NSW, a $3,000 discount applies, while stamp duty is waived for EVs costing under $78,000 for a further $5,000 discount.
As is the way with other smaller scale new manufacturers such as Cupra, Polestar will not have showrooms. Instead, buyers purchase their car online and will be able to view and test drive cars at ‘Polestar Spaces’ that will likely occur in shopping centres.
Standard equipment on all 2022 Polestar 2 models includes 19-inch wheels, LED lighting with front and rear daytime running lights (including adaptive taillights), auto lights and wipers, an 11.2-inch centre touchscreen with Android software and an inbuilt Google assistant, Google Maps navigation, Apple CarPlay, a 250W eight-speaker sound system, vegan-friendly upholstery, semi-electric front seats with heating, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, frameless auto-folding mirrors, phone-based locking and unlocking and an electric tailgate.
Safety kit includes eight airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) with cyclist and pedestrian detection with steering assistance, lane keep assist with oncoming lane and run-off road lane mitigation, traffic sign recognition, driver attention monitoring and front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera.
Buyers can choose from three option packs to give the 2022 Polestar 2 more equipment. The $5,000 Pilot Pack adds a stronger suite of driver assistance tech that’s disappointingly not standard, including adaptive cruise control, lane trace assist, a 360-degree parking camera, blind-spot monitoring with steering assistance, cross traffic alert with active braking, rear collision warning, Matrix headlights and LED front fog lights.
The $6,000 Plus Pack adds a panoramic glass roof, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, ‘WeaveTech’ vegan upholstery, electric front seats with memory and heating, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, heated wipers and a heat pump, which reduces the heating system’s energy usage to improve range.
Finally, the $8,000 Performance Pack for the Long Range Dual-Motor variant adds adjustable Öhlins dampers, Brembo brakes, 20-inch wheels and ‘Swedish Gold’ detailing.
Single options include metallic paint, 20-inch wheels and ventilated Nappa leather upholstery (which requires the Plus Pack to be selected) and pricing for those is yet to be announced.
All 2022 Polestar 2 variants will also come with a five-year/unlimited km warranty, five years of roadside assistance and five years of servicing as well.
