Toyota’s new LandCruiser 300 Series might only be months old, but it and the LandCruiser 76 Series were overtaken by Nissan’s 12-year-old Y62 Patrol in February 2022’s new-vehicle sales race in Australia.
That’s right; the Y62 Patrol currently holds the title of most popular upper-large SUV, with the perennial best-seller, the LandCruiser wagon (LC300/LC76), having fallen short last month.
Specifically, 670 examples of the Y62 Patrol were sold in February 2022, representing a huge 101.8 per cent increase month-on-month, as Nissan continued to reduce its order backlog as MY22 stock arrived (see related story link below).
The LandCruiser wagon, on the other hand, found 612 new homes in February 2022, with its volume down a considerable 53.8 per cent month-on-month, as Toyota continues to grapple with high demand but interrupted supply due to intermittent production stops.
According to Toyota’s website, the average local wait time for the LC300 and LC76 is eight and 12 months, respectively, while Nissan confirmed three weeks ago that the Y62 Patrol’s delivery process is taking four to five months.
That said, the LandCruiser wagon is still ahead of the Y62 Patrol year-to-date, with the former having sold 1342 examples (-53.8%) in the first two months of 2022, while the latter managed 785 units (+37.0%).
For reference, the LandCruiser wagon has dominated the Y62 Patrol since the pandemic began in 2020, forcing Australians to holiday at home and driving up sales of these off-roaders in the process.
In 2020, the LandCruiser wagon enjoyed a winning full-year margin of 11,023 examples over the Y62 Patrol, before it grew to an even more commanding 12,258 units in 2021. Of note, the now-discontinued LC200 was a large factor in both of those results.
