The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Vito has been updated for the new model year, adding a new engine and features, but higher prices – and a new name for the people mover formerly known as the Mercedes-Benz Valente.

Due in showrooms in May, 116 and 119 variants of the Vito van – and the Vito Tourer, formerly known as the Valente (more details in a moment) – have been upgraded to Mercedes-Benz’s latest ‘OM 654’ 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, replacing the 2.1-litre (2143cc) ‘OM 651’ unit previously offered.

In addition to the new engine and gearbox, standard equipment levels have also risen on 116 and 119 variants – along with prices, which are up by between $1158 and $4536 across the range.

While the 116 and 119 justify their price hikes with new features, the entry-level Vito 111 vans are $1158 to $1258 more expensive – attributed by a company spokesperson to “offset the increase in production costs applicable for that model.”

Shared with Mercedes-Benz’s car and SUV ranges, the new 2.0-litre ‘OM 654’ engine in the 116 and 119 claims to deliver reduced noise and increased efficiency through a new nine-speed automatic transmission (replacing a seven-speed) and aluminium construction. A diesel particulate filter is carried over from the old engine.

Outputs are unchanged, meaning Vito 116 models develop 120kW and 380Nm, with the 119 variants upping outputs to 140kW and 440Nm. Drive continues to be sent to the rear wheels only, with the engine Euro 6 compliant.

The entry-level Vito 111 retains its Euro 5-compliant 1.6-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, sending 84kW and 270Nm to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

In addition to the new engine, all Vito 116 and 119 models gain a selection of previously-optional features as standard, namely adaptive cruise control (badged Distronic, and previously a 119 exclusive), tinted windows, ‘comfort’ seats, and all-season rubber floor mats.

The Vito’s eight-seat people mover twin, the Valente, is now known as the Vito Tourer – said to align “with the global naming convention for this product line [rather than the Australia and NZ-only Valente badge] and future products to come, such as the eVito Tourer later this year,” Mercedes-Benz Vans says.

Compared to the outgoing Valente, the new Vito Tourer – available only in 116 trim – gains the 2022 Vito’s new 2.0-litre OM654 engine and nine-speed gearbox, plus adaptive cruise control, tinted windows, 17-inch alloy wheels, velour floor mats, and seat cushion length adjustment.
