Introduced at the 2018 Guangzhou Auto Show, the BYD Tang EV is 3.5 years old, and it is time for a comprehensive update. Backed by local media reports, pictures China’s MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) released in November 2021 reveal that the 2022 BYD Tang EV is coming up shortly.

The 2022 BYD Tang EV flaunts a Gen II EV look that makes it instantly recognizable as an electric vehicle. It has a noticeably cleaner front compared to its ICE donor model. The BYD design team has replaced the large hexagonal grille with a closed surface, which could offer improvements in aerodynamics, and therefore the range. A sportier bumper with more aggressive outer ends, a full-width horizontal bar that flows into the side air vents, and a taller lower air intake are the other changes at the front.
The softer and EV-typical front fascia will make the 2022 BYD Tang EV appeal to the customer who is upgrading from a thermal-engined vehicle. On the sides, the new Tang EV features new alloy wheels. At the rear, a sportier bumper with repositioned light reflectors, black fins, and small vertical air outlets offer enhanced styling. We are yet to know of any major interior changes on the inside.

BYD has partially revealed the interior of the new Tang EV in a teaser. The company will offer it in a new, 2+2+2 seating layout with individual seats in the second row. Expect the new, comfort-focused seating layout to be optional. The 6-seat version could feature individual seats with electric adjustment, massage, ventilation, and heating.
2022 BYD Tang EV Specifications
Getting to the specifications, the rehashed Tang EV measures 4,900 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,725 mm in height. The battery pack consists of LFP cells, but the energy storage capacity isn’t available.
According to a leaked internal document published on autohome.com.cn, the 2022 Tang EV will come in single-motor 2WD and dual-motor 4WD variants that deliver a range of 730 km (454 miles) and 635 km (395 miles), respectively. These are significant improvements from the current model’s 565 km/351-mile (2WD) and 505 km/314-mile (4WD) range figures.
The standard-range variant will consume 15.6 kWh per 100 km (62 miles), and the extended-range 17.6 kWh per 100 km (62 miles). The latter will use a combination of a 180 kW motor and a 200 kW motor and be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.4 seconds.

Release Date
Pre-sales of the new BYD Tang EV in China will start at the end of this month, and the launch is programed in the end of April 2022, as per the autohome.com.cn report. It suggests that BYD could price the new Tang EV at CNY 300,000 (USD 47,090) in the standard-range variant and CNY 340,000 (USD 53,369) in the extended-range variant. The report doesn’t say whether it’s talking about the pre-sale prices or the final, launch prices, but we think the latter is highly unlikely.
Norway, where the current Tang EV went on sale in September 2021, may have to wait a year or so to receive the refreshed model. BYD is also in the process of expanding into Europe, and more markets will eventually have the Tang EV in their locality.
