1970 Chevrolet El Camino
1970 CHEVROLET EL CAMINO GETS A NEW SKIN
The 1970 Chevelle and so the El Camino got a complete reskin, taking on a chunkier, more muscular, more squared up look. Up front there were quad headlights molded into a smooth front facia, framing a squarish formal grille with a horizontal bar splitting it, and either an SS emblem or Chevy Bow Tie on non-SSs. The sides were clean and not overly sculpted, with no more trim than was necessary. The squarish tail lights wrapped around the back corners, with a chrome-trimmed black trim panel running between them. The interiors were also complete restyled.
1970 CHEVROLET EL CAMINO SS ENGINE LINEUP
A wide range of non-performance engines were available in non-SS El Caminos including two 6-cylinders (230 and 250ci), the 307 and 350 small block V8s in several flavors, then the big blocks. All SSs were big blocks, and became either an SS396 or SS454 based on which size you chose. The 396 had actually been pushed up to 402 cubic inches, but continued to be called a 396, perhaps for its marketing value (the 396 was already well known and had a nice ring to it), or was a bow to GMs archaic policy of limited midsized cars to no more than 400 cubes. Of course, the availability of the new 454 rendered that a moot point. Available in 2 forms, the LS5 was rated at 375hp, but the real star was the LS6 which was conservatively rated at 450hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, was a pure monster on the street or the strip. With it, the El Camino SS454 was good for a low-13 second quarter mile run.
