Toyota currently has eight such trim offerings across its lineup, with more on the way. Among all those, the 2023 edition of the Camry Nightshade Special Edition — also known as the SE Nightshade — is the latest to darken dealerships’ doors. Despite being short on big changes for the new model year, the mid-size sedan’s evening edition casts a long shadow on this week’s countdown of the most popular Cars.com news articles, taking a comfortable lead to land the first-place spot.
The Camry’s Nightshade appearance package adds darkened features to gas-only and hybrid models of the mid-tier SE trim level, in part as a nod to the more aggressive sport suspension. A black mesh grille, rear spoiler, mirror caps and badging set the tone, while the 2023 model replaces the previous version’s 18-inch wheels with 19-inch bronze aluminum wheels, and adds new black trim for the headlights and taillights as well as the new Reservoir Blue exterior paint option. Pricing is still forthcoming, but expect both to match or exceed current Nightshade models’ roughly $29,000 to $31,000 starting prices.

Overshadowed by the Camry Nightshade, but still managing the third-place spot on our weekly countdown, is another mid-size sedan, the 2022 Nissan Altima. After driving the current-model-year Altima, Cars.com reviewer Jennifer Geiger shares a honey-do list of items Nissan could improve to make the car more appealing — and maybe even woo a few of the otherwise SUV-inclined to the sedan side. Among her constructive criticisms, Geiger cites: buyers’ inability to have both the optional turbocharged engine and available all-wheel drive on the same car; difficulties safely installing children’s booster seats in the rear; and the lack of a hybrid or all-electric Altima variant. On the other hand, the Altima’s price and higher inventory numbers could make it an appealing alternative to the more expensive, less available Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
