Dan Ricciardo gets up close and personal with the LEGO version of his ride for this weekend’s Australian GP.
LEGO and McLaren Racing have teamed up to create a lifesize version of their LEGO Technic McLaren Formula 1 Race Car to mark the 2022 Australian Grand Prix. The giant build will be on display at the track for this year’s Australian GP in Melbourne for LEGO fans to visit and interact with one of Australia’s most exciting builds yet.
Just like its real-life counterpart, the LEGO Technic build pays homage to McLaren’s iconic papaya livery carried on the MCL35M race cars throughout the 2021 F1 season, while also providing an interpretation of the new-look 2022 F1 car.
McLaren Racing’s star drivers, Australia’s Dan Ricciardo and his teammate Lando Norris were given a first look at the LEGO masterpiece, with the plastic F1 car sitting in the pitlane of the Albert Park circuit. The life-sized LEGO car is nine times the size of its take-home Technic model set equivalent and has been designed to allow people to sit in it thanks to the removable halo and steering wheel.
As with many of LEGO’s Australian large-scale builds, the LEGO Master himself, Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught was given the task of bringing the McLaren to life. The Brickman was amongst 27 people who worked on the project including engineering experts from the LEGO Group and McLaren Racing. It took 1893 hours and a huge 288,315 LEGO bricks to complete the build of the Technic McLaren Formula 1 race car.
