The Toyota Innova is all set to receive a comprehensive update, which will change the way it looks and its basic architecture under the skin
Toyota’s most successful product in India, the Innova Crysta, will receive a comprehensive upgrade after six long years since it came to India. After a couple of days since its spotting on test runs in Thailand, the MPV got spied doing test runs on the Indian roads. A recent video by Motorbeam reveals a few minute details of the next-generation version of the Toyota Innova.
What are the details revealed in the spy shots?
Not much. The whole exterior of the test mule of the next-generation Toyota Innova had a thick sheet of camouflaged cover over it. Despite the heavy camouflage, some highlights are visible in the video and might make their way into the production version of the MPV.
To start with, the overall size and dimensions of the test mule looked very similar to the current-generation Toyota Innova Crysta. While there might be minute alterations in the dimensions against the current model, the new version will not be significantly bigger than how the current form of Innova Crysta is in comparison to the first-generation Innova.
While the shape and design of the front and rear windscreens look very much the same, the rear three-quarter glass panels look different and more angular than how they look now. The rear fenders also are expected to have a few sheet metal changes, as is evident from the curves and bulges in the test mule. The new model is also riding on a new set of alloy wheels.
These images by Motorbeam of test mule spotted in India don’t reveal much
The test mule of the next-generation Toyota Innova Crysta spotted in India revealed a few highlights, which include two-part horizontally-laid LED tail lamps and a roof-mounted spoiler with an LED stop lamp. Even the front end of the new model looks sleeker than before with a revised front grille and sleeker headlamps, which might get LED units.
What will be the major changes in the new-generation Toyota Innova Crysta?
It will be a full model change after six years
Apart from the comprehensive updates on the outside, the new Toyota Innova Crysta might undergo a massive change related to its chassis.

Compared to the current model, which has a ladder-on-frame body based on Toyota’s IMV platform, the new model might have its base on Toyota’s TNGA (Toyota New Generation Architecture) platform. It indicates that the new model will come with monocoque construction and a front-wheel-drive configuration, compared to the rear-wheel-drive arrangement in the current model.
The switch to monocoque from ladder-on-frame chassis and front-wheel-drive from rear-wheel-drive indicates that the new version of the Innova will feel more comfortable to drive and be driven around. However, it is unclear if the current engine options – 2.7-litre petrol and a 2.4-litre diesel with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options – will make their way into the new version.
