The new entry-level Taycan rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant has the shortest wait time out of the whole Taycan range in Australia.
Porsche’s flagship electric model gains two new variants in 2022, including the sporty GTS that arrives in May from $237,000 before on-road costs, and the freshly launched base Taycan RWD from $156,300.
And according to Porsche Cars Australia head of public relations Chris Jordan, the new RWD version is the – for now – the fastest way to get into a Taycan.
“Depending on the options you selected and Porsche Centre you spoke to, it’s probably going to be October,” he told CarsGuide.
“Whereas, for most of those other Taycan models, it’s unlikely to be this year. Being a new model, supply situation isn’t quite as bad. But the best thing for any owner to do is speak to their local Porsche Centre as they will have a better idea depending on which spec you select.”
Mr Jordan said Porsche Cars Australia was delivering as many Taycans as it could, but added that the current delays stemming from the semiconductor shortage and shipping and delivery hold ups were having an impact.
“Cars are coming in but perhaps not in numbers we would like. It varies month to month. Our sales numbers via VFACTS are really just an indicator of our supply. The order bank is really substantial and we are delivering every car we possibly can. Some months are stronger than others because that’s just how many cars are coming on ships.”
Last year, the Taycan was the third best-selling electric vehicle in Australia behind the dominant Tesla Model 3 and the MG ZS EV.
With 531 sales in 2021, it outsold the Hyundai Kona Electric, Mercedes-Benz EQA and more.
Mr Jordan said despite the expected increase in interest for Taycan with the two new variants, sales would remain static given the supply situation.
“We don’t project future sales, but I will say I don’t think it will be drastically different. A) because we are an exclusive brand and b) because of the supply situation. To grow in this supply environment is an extremely hard thing to do. For the rest of this year, the sales result will be an output of what supply is available.”
In terms of the sales split, Porsche Cars Australia believes that the new RWD Taycan will become the top seller along with the 4S. The wagon-like Cross Turismo will make up approximately 25 per cent of all sales.
Mr Jordan said the RWD Taycan is expected to bring more new buyers to the Porsche brand. He added that many Taycan buyers in the first year of sales were new to the brand, but many existing Porsche customers also added a Taycan to their garage.
