In the compact SUV category, the Subaru Forester easily made the list. This model was the #1 vehicle in its category and offers plenty of standard features for the average buyer. Consumer Reports gave it an overall score of 90 out of a possible 100 points. The road test score alone was 90 points, and that was due to its improved ride and handling as well as its impressive 28 mpg overall fuel economy. Subaru’s price, which ranges from $25,000 to $35,000, gets you a lot of value.
For instance, the Forester offers plenty of space for storage and elbow room for the driver and passenger. The suspension is also spot on since it absorbs just about any type of rough road surface. Steering is responsive, and there is not much body lean on curves.
Under the hood is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which isn’t exactly the quickest in the class, but it’s enough to pass and merge when you need it. This engine option is paired with a continuously variable transmission and, according to Consumer Reports, the acceleration time for a 0 to 60 mph run is 9.2 seconds.
The Forester received a four out of five rating for reliability, since it hasn’t had too many major problems in the last few years. As far as safety, it earned five stars in almost every crash test from NHTSA, and the IIHS gave it all good ratings.
