In a move set to shape the future of automotive design, McLaren Automotive has announced the appointment of Tobias Sühlmann as its new Chief Design Officer.

Sühlmann, an experienced automotive designer with over two decades of experience, has previously worked for some of the most renowned luxury brands in the world, including Bentley, Bugatti, and Aston Martin.

Starting in September 2023 as the new Chief Design Officer, Tobias will be responsible for every aspect of McLaren’s aesthetics, from exterior and interior styling to colours and materials. His role will also involve working closely with customers to create bespoke designs for their vehicles, which will then be hand-built in the adjacent McLaren Production Centre. With a successful track record in the automotive design industry, he will lead a design team in Surrey and be responsible for developing McLaren’s new design language across their developing product portfolio, as part of their Future of Performance business strategy.

This appointment marks a return to McLaren for Sühlmann, who previously oversaw the design of the groundbreaking Solus GT single-seat hypercar. Since then, he has worked as the head of exterior design at Bentley and was promoted to director of design for the company in January 2023. Now, just four months later, he is set to shape the future of McLaren’s design direction.
