- New Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon will have many shared components of the sedan
- Hybrid and mild hybrid powertrains are likely
- No confirmation (yet) it is coming to North America
While wide swaths of the marketplace have permanently gravitated to crossovers and SUVs, there remains a steadfast group who like their four door sedans — and an even smaller subset who want to sign the note on a station wagon. Fortunately, it seems that Mercedes-Benz is keen to continue providing an option for those customers.

It has been about 12 months since test mules of the next Mercedes-Benz E-Class were first spotted by eagle-eyed photogs, and now our spies on the ground in Germany have laid eyes on the forthcoming wagon variant of Merc’s midsize not-an-SUV four door sedan. Captured testing in an industrial area of der Deutschland, this longroof prototype suggests that while it will share much with the sedan from the b-pillars forward, its rear window may be far more aggressively raked than in previous examples of the car.
Engine choices are very much up in the air, though government electrification mandates and internal goals dictate there will surely be multiple hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. Keep in mind the all-electric EQE is constructed on its own platform, one not shared with its internal combustion cousin.
If past model years of the E-Class are any indication, there’s a good chance its interior style and level of tech will greatly depend on its price tag. Expect to find infotainment systems and screens plucked from the smaller C-Class at the entry level, while snazzier trims are likely to earn the brand’s massive 12.9-inch screen which features haptic feedback. The tremendous Hyperscreen is likely to remain on only Mercedes EVs as part of its unique selling proposition (of which they have several).
Interestingly, it is often said that the E-Class wagon lays claim to a customer base with an extremely high average income, putting itself in company with folks who buy other expensive models such as the G Wagen SUV and SL convertible. While wagons are incredibly popular in Europe, it is as yet unclear if this wagon will make it across the pond for the 2024 model year. Still, we will note some of Merc’s direct competitors have recently chosen to offer wagons in this size class, much to our surprise and delight.
