The Malaysian electric vehicle (EV) revolution is still behind some of our neighbours but that progress might be accelerated with CSH Alliance Bhd seeking to acquire three plots of industrial land in Tanjung Malim, Perak to locally assemble (CKD) the BYD T3 electric van.

CSH Alliance’s subsidiary, Alliance EV Sdn Bhd (AEV) was appointed as the distributor for BYD’s commercial electric vans on 1-April 2022. The company is proposing to buy the 55-acre land in Tanjung Malim for RM 12 million cash.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, CSH said that AEV entered into a sale and purchase agreement with Medium Visa Sdn Bhd and Harapan Iringan Sdn Bhd for the proposed acquisition. AEV has partnered with BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the BYD Group to distribute and market the BYD T3.

The T3 electric van could be the first CKD electric van to be assembled by AEV and it is described as a pure electric logistics vehicle with low energy consumption and high performance. It is powered by an AC permanent magnet synchronous motor that makes 134 PS/180 Nm and a top speed of 100 km/h.
The motor is charged by a 50.3 kWh BYD lithium-ion NCM battery with a range of up to 300 km on a single charge. AC charging at 6.6 kW takes 7.6 hours from 0-100% while DC charging at 40 kW takes 1.3 hours.

In a statement by CSH executive director, Peter Yap, “The land acquisition is also part of AEV’s strategic efforts in meeting MITI requirements to have a CBU (completely built-up), CKD and local assembly plant in the car manufacturing sector. We are preparing this requirement in advance,”

CSH also said that the land acquisition would enable the commencement as well as allow the growth of the EV business and complement its financial services business. The group may offer flexible financing schemes to transport and logistics companies to fund the purchases of the EVs and/or capital.
Electric vans in Malaysia are very niche with only one model currently on sale, the CAM EC35 which is priced from RM 130,000. The electric van makes 80 PS/200 Nm and is juiced up by a 38.7-kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery with a WLTP range rated at 268 km. AC charging at 6.6 kW takes 8 hours for 0-100% while DC charging at 40 kW takes 2.5 hours for a full charge.
