McMurtry’s record-breaking EV racer that outpaced Volkswagen ID.R at Goodwood enters production
The 2023 McMurtry Speirling Pure electric hypercar that set a new world record at the famous Goodwood hill climb last year is now available to order, with the 745kW single-seater priced from £820,000 ($A1.54m) plus taxes.
This production version is based on the McMurtry Speirling Plus that claimed the outright record for the 1.87km climb at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, stopping the clock at 39.08sec – 0.82sec quicker than the previous record set by the battery-powered Volkswagen ID.R in 2019.
Updates to the road-going McMurtry Speirling include overhauling the racer’s fan system that is now claimed to be up to 15 per cent more efficient, although the British car-maker hasn’t said if the total 2000kg downforce figure has been boosted.
Other changes include a revised rear e-axle that provides the rear wheel with as much as 746kW.
Factor in a kerb weight of less than 1000kg and McMurtry says its Speirling – which is Irish for ‘thunderstorm’ – is capable of a 0-100km/h sprint of just 1.5 seconds and a top speed of more than 306km/h.
Energy is drawn from a 60kWh battery that has also been revised and is 15 per cent lighter than before.
Thanks to the power pack’s advanced thermal management, McMurtry says the battery can be topped up in just 20 minutes using a DC fast-charger.
No range has been quoted, but the all-electric hypercar-maker says the Speirling Pure is capable of 10 flat-out laps of the Silverstone race circuit before it needs a charge.
In the transition from prototype to production car, the McMurtry Speirling Pure has also picked up a new side skirt design and all-new electrical architecture that uses 33 per cent less wiring. There’s also an updated, lighter power steering system, different brakes (including ABS as an option), a new pedal box and even revisions to the full carbon-fibre monocoque.
Despite still measuring in at just 3450mm long, 1580mm wide and standing just 1020mm tall, the hypercar has been set up to accommodate a 6ft7in tall driver, although there is a 150kg weight limit.
Announcing production would start in 2024, the British EV start-up said it will produce 100 McMurtry Speirling Pure hypercars.
