The Alcazar gets a bigger naturally-aspirated petrol engine while the Carens features a smaller turbo-petrol unit
After bringing the hit duo of Kia Seltos and second-generation Hyundai Creta, the Korean duo of Kia and Hyundai are trying to emulate the same success in one segment above – three-row utility vehicles. While Hyundai has come with the Alcazar SUV that looks like a stretched version of Creta inside-out, the Kia Carens is an MPV with a completely different design in and out compared to the Seltos.
Overview
While the Alcazar and Carens are two entirely different vehicles, both UVs share the same K2 platform that underpins the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Like the appearance, even the petrol-powered engine options under their hoods are different.
There’s a video from the YouTube channel of Ayush SSM which shows which one of the two is faster in a drag race – the Hyundai Alcazar with a naturally-aspirated petrol engine or the Kia Carens with a turbocharged petrol engine.
The Contenders
The three-row utility vehicles used in the drag race follow two entirely different approaches for their petrol engines. The Hyundai Alcazar has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine shared with other Hyundai products like Elantra and Tucson. The manual version of the Alcazar used in the drag race here has a 6-speed manual gearbox mated to the engine and produces 158 PS of power and 191 Nm of torque.
The Kia Carens used in this drag race has a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine under its hood, which churns out 140 PS of maximum power and 242 Nm of peak torque output. Here, the engine is paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox and is the same engine that powers the top-spec variants of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
The Alcazar is an upgrade to the Creta
While the naturally-aspirated petrol engine of the Hyundai Alcazar produces more outright power, the turbocharged petrol engine of the Kia Carens has more outright torque to offer. Which aspect feels more beneficial in a drag race? We let the vehicles here do the talking.
Hyundai Alcazar vs Kia Carens: Drag Race
This drag race between the two cars show exactly the same
In the video, we can see that the drag race between Hyundai Alcazar and Kia Carens had three different rounds, and in one of the three rounds, the drivers switched their vehicles as well. In all three rounds, the Kia Carens pulled with quicker initial launches. The stronger initial pull gave the Carens an advantage in the form of significant leads over the Alcazar till the end of all three rounds.
Conclusion
While many might believe that the higher outright power of the Hyundai Alcazar should have given the advantage to it in a drag race, it is the higher torque output of the Kia Carens which made it a clear winner.
The presence of a turbocharger played a crucial role in determining the winner of the drag race between the two vehicles here. The turbocharged petrol engine of the Carens produces a higher torque output at much lower RPM, which helps it in giving a stronger initial pull over the Alcazar. It is why despite being a smaller engine in terms of capacity, the petrol engine of the Carens made it a winner of this drag race.
