The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is offered with two engine options, one petrol and the other diesel. We take a closer look at both these engine options to determine which is better.
The Land Cruiser Prado is a stalwart in Toyota’s arsenal of large capable SUVs. If the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 is slightly out of reach, but you want something a little more refined than the Land Cruiser 76 yet retain some of that legendary capabilities, the Land Cruiser Prado might just be what you are looking for.
Currently, in its fourth generation, the Land Cruiser Prado not only offers customers the ability to tackle gruelling terrain but do so confidently and reliably. Part of this recipe for success happens under the bonnet where Toyota offers customers the choice of either a V6 petrol engine or a 4-cylinder diesel, both ready for almost anything you will test it with. Let us compare the figures to see which is better.

To better understand where each engine excels, we need to take look at the performance and efficiency figures provided. Not only does this make it easy to identify which will be better for your needs but also give us a better idea of which gives the most bang for your buck.

Warranty and service
Whether you purchase the petrol or diesel derivatives, included in the price is identical service plans for both. The service plan is for 9 services and 90 000 km with the service intervals set to every 10 000 km. It is important to adhere to the servicing schedule as if skip an interval, it could negatively affect your manufacturer car warranty, even resulting in it being voided.
The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado models are all covered by a manufacturer car warranty for 3-years or 100 000 km, whichever occurs first.
Verdict
Late in 2020, Toyota introduced the updated 2.8-litre diesel engine to the range which subsequently resulted in the impressive figures listed above. Even though the diesel derivative in the VX grade will cost you R 37 500 more than the petrol variant, at the time of writing this article, it provides the value to back up that premium.
Not only does the diesel motor offer more torque for those tough inclines on your route but also sees a significantly lower average fuel consumption figure when compared with its petrol-powered counterpart. For these reasons, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2.8GD is the better choice if you are considering adding this impressive vehicle to your garage.
