Toyota enjoys a stellar reputation in South Africa, and many people say that a Toyota in your garage is like a cheque in your pocket. Find out what you can get new for the least amount of money, and take a look at an excellent used option as well.
Few manufacturers enjoy the same kind of brand loyalty as Toyota does from its customers. The brand has the largest dealer footprint in South Africa, Toyotas are always in demand in the used-car market, and most Toyotas aren’t expensive to repair – plus there’s never a shortage of parts. If you’re keen on owning a new Toyota, what is the most affordable passenger car in the range?
The Toyota Agya
Serving as a replacement for the Toyota Aygo, the Agya was co-developed with Daihatsu. It is based on the Daihatsu Ayla.
The front-wheel-driven Agya is powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine with 49 kW and 89 Nm of torque, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic gearbox.

Safety features comprise ABS, two airbags, remote central locking, child locks, Isofix on the outer rear seats, and LED headlights. It’s not as well-equipped as the discontinued Toyota Aygo, however.
If you can’t quite afford a new Agya and you can find a young, used Toyota Aygo with low mileage, you won’t be sorry. Search for used Toyota Aygo models on AutoTrader.
The Toyota Aygo X-Cite features a folding sunroof if you’re not keen on something quite as run-of-the-mill as the Agya.
The Toyota Agya is priced as follows:
Toyota Agya 1.0, R192 300
Toyota Agya 1.0 (audio), R196 400
Toyota Agya 1.0 Auto, R207 300
Toyota Agya 1.0 Auto (audio), R211 400
These prices were correct at the time this article was published, but increases are the norm. Visit the Toyota Agya microsite to view the latest prices.
