If you need to transport a large desk but don’t have access to a bakkie, then call your friend who owns a VW Polo Sedan.
This was the feedback from TopAuto reader Hanno, who said his Polo Sedan’s massive boot can perform miracles.
Not everything about his car is perfect, however, as he details in his feedback below.
Which model do you own?
2014 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 Comfortline sedan.
When did you get the car?
I bought the car second-hand from a Lindsay Saker dealer in January 2020.
It already had around 80,000km on the clock.
What are your three favourite things about the car?
It has excellent fuel consumption. Volkswagen claims 6.1l/100km, or just over 16km per litre, but I’ve often measured around 18km-20km per litre on a tank.
The massive boot space of 454 litres is another plus, and it means I can easily fit plenty of stuff.
This is great for long trips, and on top of this there is enough space for three people to sit at the back, too.
When I put the rear seats down, it’s basically like a convertible bakkie.
I even took a bet with a colleague in the office that I would be able to fit an enormous old L-shaped desk in my car.
End result: I had to drive with the boot slightly open, but that desk is now a critical part of my home gaming setup.
Cruise control in the Comfortline also makes driving on the highway, and long distances, much more enjoyable.
Which three things do you like least about the car?
The 63kW engine can be a bit underwhelming and sometimes struggles to accelerate beyond 100km/h uphill – without shifting down to fourth gear.
A lack of a proper infotainment system with Android Auto support is another problem.
The VW Polo is also very popular, which means there are plenty of Polos on the road and this makes the car seem a bit bland in public.
Although I’ve never been mistaken for an e-hailing driver by the general public, my friends make a point of calling the car an Uber whenever they catch a ride with me.
What is it like to drive your car every day?
The ride is comfortable, with accurate steering and smooth gear shifts.
What is the hardest journey you have done with your car?
I have driven around 2,000km on a trip to the Kruger Park and surrounds, which included an excursion into an area with plenty of potholes and degraded gravel.
The Polo came out on top.
Would you recommend your car to friends and family?
Yes, I most definitely would recommend a VW Polo to friends and family.
Parts are easy to come by and VW models retain their value like few other brands.
