Uno de cada cuatro eléctricos que se venden en el Viejo Continente tiene el sello del grupo alemán.

Contrario a lo que se piensa, Tesla no es el fabricante de coches eléctricos con más ventas en Europa. El año pasado, esa posición de privilegio la obtuvo el Grupo Volkswagen, que gracias a sus numerosas marcas, logró aventajar a la firma americana por una buena cantidad de matriculaciones. De hecho, Tesla tuvo que conformarse con la tercera posición, muy a pesar del fuerte impacto que tuvo el Model 3 en los distintos mercados europeos.

De acuerdo con los datos de JATO Dynamics para 28 países europeos, el Grupo Volkswagen registró casi 302.000 coches de pasajeros eléctricos (un dato que excluye a los híbridos enchufables). Esa cantidad equivale al 25% del total de eléctricos en Europa, o el doble de la cuota de mercado que tenía en 2018. Estos datos representaron el 10% del total registrado por el Grupo Volkswagen en Europa.

Por su parte, Tesla, a pesar del boom del Model 3 y mas recientemente del Model Y, ha visto caer su cuota drásticamente. En 2018, antes de la llegada del sedán, tenía un 14,7% de cuota. Tras su llegada, esta subió al 31% en 2019, para caer al 13.3% en 2020 y subir ligeramente al 13,9% el año pasado. En efecto, el Model 3 sigue siendo el eléctrico más vendido en Europa, pero ya no está solo.

De hecho, la competencia es tanta que Tesla no fue el segundo mayor fabricante, sino el tercero. Por primera vez, el grupo Stellantis matriculó más coches eléctricos que la marca de California.

Según los datos, el conglomerado formado por los antiguos grupos PSA y FCA logró comercializar casi 175.000 unidades (con un 14,51 de cuota) de las versiones eléctricas del Peugeot 208 y 2008, Fiat 500, Citroen C4, Opel Corsa y Mokka, entre otros. A pesar del crecimiento (en 2019, FCA+PSA registró 5.300 unidades), estos modelos apenas representaron el 7,3% del total del grupo en Europa.

Los chinos, con el 5% del mercado

Los coches eléctricos chinos fueron otros de los protagonistas de 2021. El fabricante Geely, representado en Europa por las marcas Volvo y Polestar, se acercó peligrosamente a Nissan en el ranking, gracias a la buena acogida del XC40 Recharge y el Polestar 2.

Por su parte, el grupo SAIC también lo hizo muy bien con su marca MG, que comenzó a operar en algunos países europeos. De hecho, después de Tesla, es el grupo con mayor pero de las ventas eléctricas, con un 45% de sus matriculaciones totales. En total, las marcas pertenecientes a fabricantes chinos matricularon casi 62.000 unidades, el 5,1% del total.

La fiebre SUV también entre los eléctricos

Uno de los factores que explica el crecimiento acelerado de los eléctricos en Europa y en todo el mundo, es la llegada de los SUV. Hasta 2020, las personas que querían conducir uno de estos coches debían conformarse con las carrocerías tradicionales, como los sedán y hatchbacks. Esto cambió con fuerza a partir del año pasado, cuando comenzaron a llegar los SUV eléctricos.

En 2021, estos vehículos representaron el 40% de las matriculaciones eléctricas en Europa, convirtiéndose en el primer segmento. Es una réplica de lo que sucede en el mercado total, donde la cuota de mercado de los SUV fue del 46%. Es decir, todavía hay espacio para más SUV y más ventas en el mercado del eléctrico.
