Volkswagen will be unveiling its new sedan on 8th March. Till now, we have only seen the new mid-size sedan in camouflage. However, now the manufacturer has started teasing the sedan officially. It is expected to be called Virtus because Volkswagen is already using the same name in the global market.
The first teaser shows a Virtus finished in metallic red colour. We can also see the Daytime Running Lamps that are L-shaped and there is also a projector setup for the headlamp. Both of which are using LEDs. At the rear, there will be a pair of split LED tail lamps. Having said that till now we have not seen the production-spec Virtus, all the sightings have been with camouflage only.
There is Volkswagen’s traditional sleek grille with a vertical slat and badge. The air dam and fog lamp housing is relatively large which does give a bit of sporty appeal to the sedan. The design looks clean with simple straight lines which is a characteristic of Volkswagen’s design language.
Engineered for the thrills. Exhilaration, unveiling soon.

The Virtus will be unveiled globally on 8th March and the launch is expected to happen by the third week of May. It will be replacing the Vento in the line-up but will be positioned higher because it is a larger and more premium sedan. Virtus is also the second product under INDIA 2.0 Strategy, the first product was the Taigun mid-size SUV.
Virtus will be sharing its underpinnings with the Skoda Slavia, Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. All four vehicles are based on the same platform and will use the same set of engines and gearboxes. The switchgear and features would also be shared. Part sharing is quite common in the automotive industry. This helps automotive companies in saving research and development cost and production cost because they do not have to develop and produce a specific part for only one vehicle.
Platform
Volkswagen will use the MQB-A0-IN platform for the Virtus. This means that the wheelbase will measure 2,651 mm. So, there should be an ample amount of legroom. Other dimensions of the Virtus are not yet known. We are expecting that the boot space should be around 500 litres. There should be a decent ground clearance too.
Engine and gearbox
There will be only two petrol engines on offer. Both will be turbocharged and will get direct-injection technology. There is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI engine and a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI engine. The 1.0 TSI produces 115 PS of max power and 178 Nm of peak torque. It will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Then there is the 1.5-litre TSI engine that produces 150 PS of max power and 250 Nm of peak torque. It is offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This engine will also come with ACT or Active Cylinder Technology. So, it would be able to shut its cylinders in certain conditions. This will help in increasing fuel economy and reducing emissions.
Rivals
Volkswagen Virtus will go against Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Honda City and Skoda Slavia.
