Volkswagen is arguably the electric car leader in Europe following the launch of its ID.3 last year and the arrival of the ID.4 a few months ago. Not to mention EVs from its underlings, such as the Porsche Taycan and upcoming Audi e-Tron GT. Granted, it still has some way to go to overtake Tesla but recent spy shots suggest VW is developing a new electric car to take on the American EV maker’s Model X SUV.
Covered in what appears to be a Peugeot 5008-inspired camouflage wrap, the so-called ID.6 looks, as the name suggest, like a larger version of the upcoming ID.4. While the front end is covered in cladding, it’s clear to see that it’ll feature the same flat nose as the ID.4 and incorporate a high bonnet.
Things become a bit more chunky further back. The ID.4’s sloping roofline is much higher on the ID.6, presumably so that you can fit even more in the boot. And, unlike VW’s smaller electric SUV, the ID.6 will accommodate an extra set of seats a total of seven.
The ID.6 will be based on VW’s MEB architecture, the same platform as the ID.3 and 4. There’s no official word yet on what battery and motor configuration the SUV will adopt, but VW’s research and development chief Frank Welsch told Autocar that the range-topping battery will offer up to 700km (that’s 345 miles) of range. It’ll also support 200kW fast charging, giving you around 143 miles in just ten minutes.
Although VW is already testing the car, it’s unlikely the ID.6 will arrive any time soon. It’s widely believed production won’t start until 2023, suggesting that sales won’t open for another two years at the very earliest. When they do open, prices should start at over £50,000, given that the ID.4 comes in at £44,000.
