- Honda Civic-sized sedan that's priced like a Honda City
- No turbo engine for ASEAN
- It offers features not found on regular B-segment sedans
If the usual B-segment suspects like the Honda City, Toyota Vios, and Nissan Almera look a bit too common, fret not as the 2022 MG5 GT looks to change things up a bit.
Alongside the refreshed 2022 MG ZS EV facelift, MG Thailand has also showcased the 2022 MG5 GT – a Honda Civic-sized sedan that’s priced closer to a Honda City and Toyota Vios.
Speaking of size, the 2022 MG5 GT is 4,675 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,473 mm tall. It has a 2,680 mm long wheelbase. That puts it longer and wider than a City, inching closer to the Civic. The latter still has a longer wheelbase, coming in at 2,735 mm, while the MG5 GT’s wheelbase is 2,680 mm.
While the MG5 GT is offered with a turbocharged engine (173 PS, 275 Nm) in China, the swanky sedan is only offered with a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre engine here. The less powerful motor does 114 PS and 150 Nm – on par with the City and Vios.
A CVT transmission with 8 virtual ratios is the sole transmission option, sending power to the front wheels.
MG didn’t skimp on the interior of the MG5 GT as well – it looks properly expensive inside. The range-topping X variant you see here gets a 7-inch digital instrument cluster as well as a 10-inch infotainment display, the latter even supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Although the MG5 GT is priced like a B-segment car, it offers features like a 6-way power adjustable driver seat and a panoramic sunroof.
Over in Thailand, the 2022 MG5 GT is priced from THB 569,000 (~RM 72k) to THB 699,000 (~RM 88k). For comparison, the Thai-spec Honda City is priced between THB 579,500 (~RM 73k) to THB 739,000 (~RM 93k).
