Korean brand starts trial in Sydney to ease demand for popular IONIQ 5 electric car
A fresh batch of Hyundai IONIQ 5 battery-electric SUVs has just been released by Hyundai Australia, but the catch is they’re not brand-new.
Hyundai Australia is trialling a new online sales program in Sydney to sell used examples of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 – and the forthcoming Hyundai IONIQ 6 – that were primarily Hyundai’s own company cars and dealer demonstrator models.
You can, of course, already purchase used examples of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 on carsales.com.au in various states and territories, both from dealers and private sellers. See our listings here.
According to Hyundai, which sells new examples of the IONIQ 5 exclusively online, the company is attempting to help prospective owners get into the popular EV without paying a premium that’s above its drive-away price when new.
A spokesperson confirmed to carsales that the online platform would only be used to sell the IONIQ 5 and eventually the IONIQ 6, and not the brand’s other models.

This initial batch of vehicles comprises 23 ex-company and ex-demo IONIQ 5 EVs located in Sydney.
When the program went live, there were 20 dual-motor/all-wheel drive and three single-motor/RWD cars, all with the pre-update 72.6kWh battery pack.
