The third-generation Sienna hit the road in 2010, for model-year 2011. After a few years on sale, Toyota gave the Sienna a major update for model-year 2017, rolling out new power, better efficiency, improved multimedia systems, and more feature content.

With Toyota’s strong reputation for reliability, resale value and safety, the Sienna inspired confidence. For families active in northern locales, the Sienna was a popular pick as the only family van available with all-wheel drive in its segment, for most of this generation’s life.

For 2017, Sienna offered 30 more horsepower than the previous year, thanks to a new and more efficient V6 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. Look for 7- or 8-seat cabin configurations, as well as a wide range of trim grades to select from, including L, LE, SE, XLE and Limited.

Model year 2018 brought a styling upgrade to the mix as well.

Owners tend to be pleased by the refinement and output of the Sienna’s powertrain, as well as comfort, flexibility and even handling. Complaints include a rough ride on some surfaces, moreso on AWD-equipped models which use run-flat tires.

Available feature content included a sunroof, parking assist sensors, premium lighting with automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, navigation, a heated steering wheel, rear-seat DVD entertainment console, and a premium JBL audio system.

Tip 1: Fobs, liftgate, locks, latches

Some owners of Toyota Sienna models from this generation have reported irritating problems with locks, latches, keyfobs, and the vehicle’s power tailgate; most have not.

On your test-drive, start by confirming that both available keyfobs are able to work all door locks and the power tailgate as expected. Confirm proper operation of the push-button start system with both keyfobs, too.

Next, confirm that all door latches (interior and exterior) are in proper working order, and that all door-mounted switches (windows, locks) are completely functional.

Open the power tailgate (if equipped) from all possible releases (keyfob, dash-mounted switch, tailgate release), confirming that the tailgate fully opens and closes without issue. Note that you may need to hold the tailgate release button for a moment, rather than tapping it quickly.

A power tailgate that opens but doesn’t close, or that stops or reverses part way through its range of motion, may be suffering from one or more problems related to the alignment of the tailgate or its latch, or a problem with system electronics like sensors, wiring, or the power tailgate motor itself.

Some owners have had wonky tailgates fixed with a simple adjustment to the tailgate weather stripping, or position-detecting sensors concealed beneath that weather stripping.

If you notice any trouble, be sure to have the vehicle seen by a professional before you buy. These checks can help save money and headaches reported by some owners. Do not attempt to fix a wonky power tailgate by disconnecting the vehicle’s battery without consulting with a professional first.

Tip 2: Rear-end click or clunk

Some Sienna owners have reported a concerning clunking sound from the rear of their vehicles, particularly at low speeds and often while beginning to accelerate away from a stop.

This sensation may be more noticeable on rougher road surfaces, so be sure to visit one on your test-drive. When you do, quiet the Sienna’s cabin and listen closely for signs of trouble.

Healthy vehicles don’t clunk when travelling down rough roads, and causes may be numerous. Within the Toyota Sienna owner’s community, some owners have reported that the offending clunking sound may be the result of a problem with braking system components, including brake pads or clips that hold parking brake hardware in place.

Other owners report that unwanted clunking is a sign of worn shock absorbers, or an improperly-latched rear folding seat.

Interestingly, the sliding rear doors are a possible source of clunks as well. Over time, the latches and anchors that hold the rear doors closed may wear, and the doors themselves may shift slightly. This can result in looseness, which invites unwanted movement of the door assembly while it’s closed, leading to a clunk emanating from where the sliding door latches closed on its anchor. Some owners have successfully wrapped the sliding door anchors with some heavy tape to cushion the clunk.

Unexplained clunks can cause headaches and cost you money, so be on the lookout.

Tip 3: Climate control system checkup

To avoid potentially expensive repairs reported by a small number of owners, be sure to run the Sienna’s climate control system through its paces on your test-drive.

According to posts within the online owner’s community, some owners have experienced climate control system difficulty including non-functionality, sporadic functionality, or difficulty in getting air at the selected temperature and outlet points.

Select a cool temperature, and work systematically to cycle through all possible distribution points. Don’t forget to check rear seat climate control vents and the windshield defroster, too.

Repeat the test with the temperature set to hot. If equipped with dual-zone climate control, be sure you’re able to summon cool air for one side, and hot air for the other.

If the climate control system fails to deliver air at the temperature and location of your choosing, proceed with caution — one or more parts within the system may be in need of repair or replacement, which can be expensive.

Tip 4: Power sliding doors

Many minivans use power sliding doors, which can be a source of trouble as they age. The Toyota Sienna is no exception. Some owners have reported power sliding doors that beep instead of opening or closing, or move partway through their range of motion before stopping or reversing direction.

Other owners have reported shifting of the door and mounting provisions, which can cause rattles, squeaks, or even damage over time.

On your test-drive, be sure to run the sliding doors through their paces several times, confirming proper functionality. Occasional cleaning, servicing, adjustment and (especially) lubrication are vital to keep any power sliding door system in proper working order, and a healthy battery can help make this system more reliable, too.

Note that a false ‘Door Open’ chime or warning can be another trouble sign.

Tip 5: Brakes and alignment

Some owners have reported a shorter-than-expected lifespan from the Sienna’s braking system components, including pads and rotors. Other owners have reported faster-than-expected tire wear, often caused by a bad alignment. Many have not.

To help avoid the expense of an upcoming brake job, alignment or tire replacement, take a few steps to root out common warning signs on your test-drive.

First, quiet the cabin and apply the brakes repeatedly at light, moderate, and heavy pressure from a variety of speeds. In the process, take any unwanted vibrations, a throbbing ‘wobble’ felt through the vehicle, squealing or scraping sounds, or a soft brake pedal feel as a sign of trouble that could negatively affect vehicle safety and cost you money.

A vehicle that pulls hard to one side or the other during heavy braking is another trouble sign.

While driving down a flat road, be sure the Sienna tracks straight ahead, and doesn’t pull to one side or the other. Further, check all four tires for signs of uneven wear across the treads, which is a sign of alignment trouble that can negatively affect handling and fuel economy while accelerating tire wear.

Ensuring your Sienna’s tires, brakes, and alignment are healthy is a great way to start your ownership experience.
