Japanese coachbuilder switches from Micra to Yaris underpinnings for 2023 Mitsuoka Viewt
Famed Japanese coachbuilder Mitsuoka has reinvented the Mitsuoka Viewt – its modern-day homage to the 1963 Jaguar Mark 2.
Following three generations of Nissan Micra-based Viewt models that date back to 1993, the fourth instalment of the Mitsuoka Viewt sees the retro-styled sedan swap over to the latest Toyota Yaris (XP210).
As per the previous versions, the rebodied Yaris adopts the Jaguar-like oval chrome grille and four round lamps.
Inside, the changes are less dramatic with much of the small Toyota hatch carrying over, although there’s new seat coverings, trim colours and a rebadged wheel.
The Mitsuoka Viewt has been a considerable success for the 55-year-old car modifier that’s most famous for its wacky Honda NSX-based Orochi, selling around 13,000 Viewts since it was first introduced in 1993.
Available to order now in Japan, the latest Viewt has been priced at 3,080,000 Japanese yen ($A33,000) – more than twice the price of its unmodified Toyota Yaris doner car.
Currently, the Mitsuoka range consists of the Chevrolet Blazer-aping Buddy (Toyota RAV4-based), the Corvette-inspired Rock Star (Mazda MX-5), Jag XK120-mimicking Himiko (MX-5), the weird Rolls-Royce-shaped Galue (Nissan Altima) and the Toyota Corolla-based Ryugi.
