After its unveiling at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show, Toyota will be officiating the all-new 2018 Camry. The Toyota Camry has been America’s best-selling car for the past 15 years.
For now, this model is confirmed for USA, Japan and Australia.
Underpinning the all-new Camry is the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). With the TNGA-based platform, Toyota engineers are able to extend the Camry’s wheelbase and give the model a much wider stance. That aside, compared to the outgoing model, the new model boasts a 30-percent increase in torsional rigidity, thanks to the use of high-tensile steel and hot stamping materials.
TNGA platform aside, the all-new 2018 Toyota Camry will be available with three new engines. Entry-level Camry models will be fitted with a all-new 2.5-liter four-cylinder Dynamic Force D-4S petrol engine with 205 hp and 252 Nm. The second engine is a new 3.5-litre V6 with VVT-iW that does 301 hp and 362 Nm. Both engines are mated to a new Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid also makes a return for the 2018 model year, now with a newer Toyota Hybrid System (THS II) mated to the Dynamic Force 2.5-litre petrol engine. Outputs are slightly lower at 176 hp and 220 Nm, though output is supplemented by an electric motor that does 118 hp and 202 Nm. Combined system output is 208 hp, according to Toyota. For charging the on-board batteries, the Camry Hybrid utilizes both electric motors. Improvements to the Power Control Unit (PCU) and conversion efficiency of the electric motor help to reduce energy loss by another 20 percent.
Oily bits aside, the interior of the all-new Toyota Camry has also been redesigned. The driver now gets a sportier cockpit-style driving position with the dashboard angled towards the driver. Another new feature is the dashboard that features a centre console that flows downwards like a waterfall. High grade soft touch materials can be found on the dashboard, instrument cluster, centre console and door trim.
Technology-wise, the Toyota Camry can be had with three displays, a 10-inch color Head-Up Display (HUD); a seven-inch multi-information display within the instrument cluster, and an eight-inch infotainment system that integrates navigation and air-conditioning controls. The infotainment system on the Camry will run on Automotive Grade Linux, a first for Toyota.
Wrapping everything together is a redesigned exterior with Toyota’s Keen Look design language. Roofline is now lower than the outgoing model without sacrificing head room. This was achieved by lowering the hip points of the occupants 0.8-inches in the front and 1.2-inches at the rear.
Toyota has fitted the Camry with Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) as standard equipment for all variants, including Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA); and Automatic High Beams (AHB). Some models can be had with Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).Optionally, the 2018 Toyota Camry can also be had with Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) with a new Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB) system. Additionally, all models are equipped with 10 airbags as standard, on top of Toyota’s Star Safety System with Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Braking System, and Smart Stop Technology. Rear view camera comes standard as well.
Buyers in the US can pick one of five available trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE and XSE. Both the SE and XSE are Toyota’s sportier trims for the Camry, differentiated by its body style from the regular L and LE models. The XLE receives sculptured side skirts, 19-inch alloy wheels, subtle rear lip spoiler, aggressive front bumper and a rear bumpter with integrated rear diffuser.
The 2018 Toyota Camry is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK) in Georgetown, Kentucky for the US market.
