Toyota India has registered sales of 7,328 units in January 2022. That being said, the latest data report a decline of 34 per cent when compared to 11,126 units sold in the same time period last year. Apart from that, there has been a decline in sales compared to the previous month performance as Toyota finished 2021 with a reasonably strong 10,832 unit sales.
While the Toyota Innova Crysta and Toyota Fortuner remain consistent performers for Toyota in India, it is the Toyota Urban Cruiser and Toyota Glanza that help the Japanese brand achieve respectable sales volume.
In fact, a majority of first time Toyota buyers opt for either the Toyota Urban Cruiser or Toyota Glanza and according to sources, these buyers belong to tier 1 and tier 2 cities in India.
Thanks to specially created value-added service programs such as Express Maintenance 60, Q Service, Extended Warranty & Service Packages for its buyers, Toyota have managed to attract many young buyers.
Despite the new year being strong for more than a few automobile brands in India, Toyota has been experiencing a downward slope despite the Japanese brand performing well in the Indian market during the last year.
As mentioned earlier, Toyota India sold 10,832 units of their cars in December 2021, which is 3,504 units more when compared to Toyota’s sales for the month of January 2022. Which is alarming as the first quarter of 2021 has been the strongest for Toyota in India with 40,192 units sold in Q1 alone.
Moreover, Toyota could not sustain the same momentum in the second quarter of 2021 and resulted in Toyota India’s wholesale numbers falling below 20,000 units during the second quarter.
However, we believe the second quarter performance for the Toyota could improve as Toyota will be launching the much-awaited Toyota Hilux pickup SUV in India.
Though the Toyota Hilux is based on the same IMV-2 platform as the Toyota Fortuner and Innova Crysta, the pickup SUV is slightly longer than both the Toyota Fortuner and Toyota Innova Crysta.
To support the extra length, the upcoming Toyota Hilux will also come with a slightly longer wheelbase at 3,085mm, which is around 335 mm longer than the Toyota Innova Crysta and 340mm longer than the Toyota Fortuner.
When launched in India, the Toyota Hilux will rival the Isuzu V-Cross and Isuzu Highlander as these are the only other lifestyle pickup trucks currently on sale in India.
The upcoming Toyota Hilux is also more likely to sport features such as an 8.0-inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, auto climate control, steering mounted controls, and a few more. Moreover, the Toyota Hilux will be powered by a 201bhp 2.8-litre diesel unit from the Toyota Fortuner.
Thoughts About Toyota In India
Toyota has been very successful in India, however, despite the recent data we believe the Japanese brand is on course to a great recovery post the pandemic related difficulties.
