Toyota had a surprise reveal at the ongoing Indonesia International Motor Show in the form of the Innova EV concept. Toyota calls the Kijang Innova EV (Innova Crysta for India readers) a study of “modernity and heritage combined” mixing a long running brand name with a modern EV powertrain. Aside from the cosmetic changes visible on the body and inside the cabin details have been revealed in regard to the battery or powertrain hidden under the body.
Blue highlights and detailing help identify the EV
The most evident change on the concept is the grille which has been enclosed in a body-coloured panel with a narrow slot at the bottom and a chrome strip running between the headlamps connecting to the central Toyota logo. The EV also features a number of blue highlights such as in the Toyota logo – a feature of all electrified Toyotas, around the headlamps and taillights and in the body decals on the sides. Also present are EV badges on the fender, an ‘Electric’ badge at the tailgate. The fuel filler port on the side houses the charging socket.
Infotainment screen displays battery details, instrument cluster interestingly houses a tachometer
Inside the cabin is much the same as the regular model with the only notable change being the traditional gear selector replaced by a set of buttons on the centre console. An interesting feature of note is that the concept featured a traditional RPM gauge in the instrument cluster alongside the speedometer. The central touchscreen meanwhile seems to house additional relevant details such as battery charge status and more.
Toyota as of now has shared no details on the running gear of the Innova EV or plans to put it in production. An all-new Innova is in the works which is set to debut a hybrid powertrain for some markets. It however will be interesting to see if Toyota goes a step further and offer the next-gen car with an all-electric powertrain alongside the petrol, diesel and hybrid options.
