Toyota has revealed the Fortuner Commander variant in Thailand. However, the model is limited to just 1,000 units even though the Commander variant is based on the standard trim level.
In the new Toyota Fortuner Commander, most of the changes are cosmetic and Toyota has added a few of the premium-looking parts from the Toyota Fortuner Legender variant.
As part of the cosmetic updates, the new Toyota Fortuner Commander comes with blacked-out bits on the grille, window line and rear tailgate. Apart from these cosmetic changes, the dual-tone alloy wheels are shared with the Toyota Fortuner Legender.
To further differentiate the Toyota Fortuner Commander from the standard Fortuner lineup, the Toyota Fortuner Commander comes in two dual-tone shades – White & Black, and Red & Black. Moreover, the interior of the Toyota Fortuner Commander comes with Black & Red colour scheme.
The Toyota Fortuner Commander version launched in Thailand uses the smaller 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine. This engine produces 148bhp of power and 400Nm of torque and comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This is almost the same engine that does duty on the Indian version of the Toyota Innova Crysta.
Apart from that, the Toyota Fortuner Commander uses a rear-wheel drivetrain and a revised suspension set-up.
With these specifications, the Toyota Fortuner Commander variant with an identical specification is highly unlikely to make it to the Indian shores. However, Toyota could introduce similar specifications in future to attract more buyers with a much lower starting price point.
At present, Toyota is gearing up to launch the much-awaited Toyota Hilux pickup SUV in India and we expect the Japanese automobile giant to make the price announcement of the Hilux in March 2022 with deliveries said to begin from April.
Moreover, the Toyota Hilux pickup SUV will be assembled at Toyota’s Bengaluru manufacturing plant with 30 per cent localisation. As a result, expect prices for the Toyota Hilux to range between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 35 lakh, ex-showroom.
When launched in India, the Toyota Hilux pickup SUV will directly competes with the Isuzu V-Cross and Isuzu Highlander in India.
However, with the launch of the Toyota Hilux in India, it is safe to say that the lifestyle pickup truck segment in the country will soon become a tight space and will be buzzing with new entrants.
Thoughts About The Toyota Fortuner Commander
The Toyota Fortuner Commander variant does look a bit more premium than the standard Toyota Fortuner. However, the variant is highly unlikely to make it to Indian shores with exact specifications.
