Toyota’s top-of-the-line Quantum VX Premium recently went on sale at just over R1 million.
This minibus is rather new on the MPV scene, introduced in late 2021, and aims to compete against the likes of the VW Caravelle and Mercedes-Benz V-Class.
While the Quantum name was once shared by the popular Hiace people-carrier, the range has since been differentiated.
Below, we find out what you get when spending R1 million on the most-expensive Toyota MPV.
Packed to the brim
The range-topping Toyota Quantum VX Premium is a large van that seats nine passengers and is packed to the brim with comfort-focused features.
Contrary to its competitors, the Quantum’s spec sheet seems more geared towards transporting groups of executives rather than large families.
The van comes with four rows of seating – including the driver’s row – with two of the rear rows consisting of individual “captain’s chairs”.
The second row is heated and electrically adjustable, too, with a built-in footrest popping out when the seat is fully reclined.
Each rear row of seating has its own reading lights, USB ports, and sunshades – while the front seats are eight-way adjustable.
A partial leather upholstery in beige or black can then be chosen.
With passengers looked after, Toyota turned its attention to fitting the Quantum with high-end tech.
Every light cluster contains LEDs, including the front and rear fog lights, with the headlights being automatically operated and leveled as you drive.
It also sports a reverse camera, LED mood lighting, keyless entry and start, a 4.2-inch configurable driver’s display, rain-sensing wipers, electrically-operated sliding doors, and dual-zone climate control for the front and rear parts of the cabin.
Auto-retractable and heated wing mirrors with blind-spot monitoring take it a step further, with lane departure assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control putting the cherry on top.
To keep the gaggle of executives in the back entertained, the VX’s cabin also sees a premium touchscreen display playing through a 12-speaker layout.
This infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and voice control – alongside integrated navigation.
Passenger safety is also a top priority in this MPV, with ABS with brake assist, hill assist control, a pre-crash system, trailer sway control, parking sensors, and seven airbags keeping the occupants out of harm’s way.
Powerful
The Quantum VX Premium is driven by the same 2.8-litre, turbo-diesel engine found in the Hilux range – tuned to produce 115kW and 420Nm in this configuration.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox, achieving a decent combined fuel consumption of 8.7l/100km.
With its 70-litre fuel tank, the MPV is then rated to have a maximum range of 805km.
If needed, you can also tow up to 1,500kg.
While the VW Caravelle might have a bit more power than this particular Toyota, we recently put the Quantum to the test as found it sets the benchmark for driving quality in the segment.
Price
The Toyota Quantum 2.8 LWB Bus 9-Seater VX Premium has a South African price of R1,026,800.
This includes a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 9-services/90,000km service plan.
