The bZ4X EV will debut in Thailand later this 2022
One of Toyota’s most important models today is the new bZ4X. It’s the brand’s first-ever production electric vehicle, and it will soon be available in major markets around the world. But what about the Philippines? There’s no word about its possible arrival yet. However, its upcoming launch in Thailand could be a sign of things to come.
Toyota Motor Thailand president Noriaki Yamashita announced that the bZ4X will be coming to the Thai market later this 2022. Apart from confirmation of its upcoming arrival, he did not disclose other details such as the launch date or the specs of the EV.
Yamashita adds, “We will also explore further localization in a bid to make Thailand the key production hub for multiple electrified vehicles.” This suggests that the bZ4X EV might eventually be built in Thailand.
For reference, the bZ4X is available with two versions at launch – 2WD and 4WD. The base-model front-wheel-drive uses a single electric motor mounted at the front axle and has a peak output of 201 horsepower (150kW) and 265 Nm torque. It can take the Toyota bZ4X from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h.
As for the 4WD version, it uses two electric motors – one on each axle. Combined power output is rated at 215 horsepower (160kW) and 336 Nm torque. Despite the small power difference, the 4WD bZ4X accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. Top speed remains unchanged.
Both versions come standard with a 71.4 kWh battery pack. According to Toyota, this gives the EV up to 450 km of range via the WLTP cycle.
While the arrival of the bZ4X in Thailand does not confirm it will be offered in the Philippines, it is a good sign. Most models available in the Land of Smiles are often sold throughout the rest of the region.
Do you think Toyota Motor Philippines should bring in the bZ4X? They are expanding the lineup with hybrid vehicles either way. Maybe it’s time for an EV? Let us know what you think in the comments section.
