A little over 20 years after it commenced operations in the country, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced that it has reached the 20 lakh (2 million) unit cumulative sales milestone. TKM was incorporated in 1997 with the company’s first plant coming online in 1999 followed subsequently by the launch of the Toyota Qualis in 2000. The first plant was joined by a second, also opened in Bidadi, which commenced operations in 2010. Both plants have a cumulative annual production capacity of up to 3.10 lakh units.
Speaking on the milestone Atul Sood, Associate Vice President, Sales, and Strategic Marketing, TKM said, “We are thrilled that 2 million customers trust Toyota for their mobility needs. In this journey towards 2 million happy customers, we have come a long way. Over the last two decades, Toyota has developed a solid foundation of renowned Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR) and we hope we will be able to cater to more segments as well as newer markets in 2022 and beyond.”
The 2 millionth car was a Toyota Glanza delivered to a customer in Kerala.
The carmaker delivered the milestone vehicle, the new Glanza to a customer in Trichur, Kerala.
Toyota says its strong sales in the market have come on the back of strong showings from models such as the Innova Crysta and Fortuner which helped establish the brand in the SUV and MPV segments along with its push into the more mass-market segments with the Glanza hatchback and Urban Cruiser sub-compact SUV. Toyota said that both models have been runaway successes attracting new customers to the brand and witnessing sustained sales.
The company recorded its best monthly sales in five years in March 2022 with the Innova accounting for almost half the month’s sales numbers. The company closed FY 2021-22 with cumulative sales of 1,23,770 units.

The virtual showrooms and increased footprints have taken us closer to our customers across regions, thanks to the unrelenting support and commitment of our supplier & dealer partners and most importantly all our employees. We thank our customers for their patronage, and we will continue to strive towards our commitment to providing an awesome experience,” Sood said.
The company also revealed that it now aims to focus its attention on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across the country in a bid to expand its dealership network.
