New special-edition sports car will hit local showrooms in a matter of days, but won’t come cheap
The limited-run and very orange 2023 Toyota GR86 10th Anniversary Edition will cost Aussie sports car fans $46,700 plus on-road costs in either six-speed manual or six-speed automatic form.
Due in local showrooms by the end of the month, just 86 examples of the 10th Anniversary Edition are being offered Down Under in honour of the original Toyota 86, which arrived in Australia in mid-2012 priced from just $29,990.
However, more than a decade later, the special-edition coupe commands a $1310 price premium over the top-spec GTS version of the second-generation Toyota GR86, which was released last September with a $43,240 starting price for the base GT and a $45,390 price tag for the flagship GTS.
However, the 10th Anniversary variant adds unique Solar Orange paint, orange interior highlights, special seat embroidery and a unique black instrument panel moulding – although Australian cars miss out on the ballsier exhaust system offered in the US.
Everything else on the 10th Anniversary Edition’s spec sheet echoes that of the standard GR86 GTS, including black 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, heated front seats, aluminium pedals, 8.0-inch infotainment system, 7.0-inch multi-information display, dual-zone climate control and a limited-slip differential.
Under the bonnet is the same 2.4-litre four-cylinder boxer engine as seen in the rest of the GR86 range, meaning there’s no change to the 174kW/250Nm outputs or the two transmission options mentioned above.
“When it launched in 2012, the first-generation 86 struck a chord with those looking for an affordable sports car representing great value with Toyota reliability,” said Toyota Australia sales, marketing and franchise operations vice-president Sean Hanley.
“This new 10th Anniversary Edition channels the spirit of the original 86 while introducing a range of unique design touches, along with all upgrades that the GR86 delivered when we launched it last year.”
It remains to be seen exactly how many examples of the 10th Anniversary Edition remain for fans to purchase given Gazoo Racing Club members were given “priority access for expressions of interest” on the new model, order books for which open today.
